    Alctron Group Buy Ribbon Problems

I've had no problems with mine, though I've had only one chance to use them so far. They sounded great, but I definitely need to get some more experience with them. I'd definitely participate in another group buy if one gets started. However, like Chance, I don't have time to run it.

    Live Recording?

Some people like to use a figure-8 mic on the guitar when recording guitar and voice concurrently. The figure-8 pattern has the strongest null of any microphone type, so by positioning it correctly, you can minimize the bleed of vocal into the guitar mic. Bleed in the other direction usually...

    Microphone Search

:) Well, then, I hope he's still paying attention! Thanks for the heads-up - I hadn't even looked at the dates. Hopefully it will turn out to be useful information for someone.

    Microphone Search

Take a look at the Audio Technica AE5400. It is designed as a stage vocal mic, but it uses the same capsule as their AT4050, which is a well-respected side address workhorse mic that is just as usable for instruments as for vocals. I wouldn't hesitate to use the 5400 on instruments...

    building my own XLR cables

There are plenty of excellent quality cables made by companies other than the "big three". The reason people mention Belden, Canare, and Mogami so often is that they are well established manufacturers of high quality cable known to be excellent throughout their product lines. But it is...

    Group Buy Interest?

Here's a follow up to my own post, and one that is probably well worth noting. I (along with several others) reported on the significant difference that I heard when speaking into the two sides of these mics. But today I read a thread on rec.audio.pro that probably explains at least part, and...

Neumann KMS105's anything wrong with them?

The KMS105 is a great stage vocal mic. The biggest difficulty that I've found with them, though, is that if you give one to a vocalist who is used to, say, an SM58, they will probably work the mic too closely. If you get right on top of a KMS105 - literally kissing the front of it as many...

    Group Buy Interest?

As I observed last week, these mics are definitely NOT symmetrical in their figure-8 patterns. There is a distinct difference in timbre between the two sides, and this may well show up as a difference in level as well. Note that this is not uncommon in figure-8 mics, and in particular it is...

Pre Amps on a Soundcraft spirit

I don't know how similar or dissimilar they may be, but I really like the preamps in my Spirit 328 mixer. They are certainly not "high end", but they are noticeably better than the pres in any other budget mixer that I've tried.

Neumann KMS105's anything wrong with them?

Be careful if you split it. The KMS105 likes to see a relatively high impedance.

    Would you buy a.....?

I've recorded many vocals through a Beta 87. They are not my top choice for stage vocal mic, but they are probably among the top five. They record very nicely. Other mics to consider for the same purpose: Neumann KMS105, Audio Technica 4054 or 4055, Audio Technica AE5400, Sennheiser HD431...

    XLR Mic Cables

There are some places that make pretty good cables for not much money. Not all of them are of equal quality, though. I've had pretty good luck with some from here: http://www.audiopile.net/products/products.asp Note that they do have mic cables made from starquad cable, though it is NOT...

    Group Buy Interest?

I plugged in my HRM10s this morning, just to make sure that they both functioned correctly. I may not get a chance to actually use them on an instrument for a week or two. One thing that I immediately noticed is that the two sides of the mic have very different tonal characteristics. It...

    Group Buy Interest?

It appears that mine have arrived as well. Unfortunately, I'm stuck in Boston at the moment, and my flight has been delayed for (at least) a couple of hours. So I won't get to actually open the package until sometime after midnight. :( But I'm still really glad that they arrived. Thanks...

    Hardcore Double Bass sounds!

Here ya go: http://www.sonybmgmedia.com/streams/wm.asx?id=1634754 "Hailed by The New Yorker as 'the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively unchronicled history of his instrument [the double bass],' Meyer plays every one of the instruments on the new recording..." For more information...

    Hardcore Double Bass sounds!

Yeah, I figured that out. I was being facetious. I'm just amused at the misuse of the term double bass. Here's a term with a well-known meaning for hundreds of years, and a bunch of rock'n'rollers think they can just swipe it to mean something entirely different. Amusing, nothing more. If...

    The Taming of the Shure

The author(s) of the article, Paul Stamler (and Scott Dorsey) are regulars on the rec.audio.pro newsgroup. A new thread has just started there discussing this topic with them directly.

Mic cable silver or gold for recording?

:) I don't have to answer that - you already KNOW the answer! :) As for the rest of your post, I generally agree with you. There are some ways to clearly demonstrate that a difference exists using analytical tools. The important thing is that you recognize that your ears and your...
