Take a look at the Audio Technica AE5400. It is designed as a stage vocal mic, but it uses the same capsule as their AT4050, which is a well-respected side address workhorse mic that is just as usable for instruments as for vocals. I wouldn't hesitate to use the 5400 on instruments...

I don't know how similar or dissimilar they may be, but I really like the preamps in my Spirit 328 mixer. They are certainly not "high end", but they are noticeably better than the pres in any other budget mixer that I've tried.

Be careful if you split it. The KMS105 likes to see a relatively high impedance.
