    Taking Volcals out?....

To take vocals out without affecting the song's frequency spectrum isn't going to happen unless you can get the masters from the label. What you could do is write a patch in PD or the like and follow the pitch of the vocals with a comb filter taking out the vocals and its partials. The...

    Selecting a microphone pre-amp

In my opinion, the brick is definately in another league than the DMP3 and probably in the same league as the RNP... either way I've got much more expensive preamps now and I still have the brick around just for bass DI if nothing else. It's an incredible bass DI... and a great preamp for vocals.

    New mic closest to U47?

I've got a Lawson L47 FET... and while it doesn't have the tube body, it shares the same capsule as the L47 MP. I've never used a U47 but this mic is obviously a notch above any of the sub $500 mics I've used and might be worth a listening. Check out lawsonmicrophones.com

    behringer b-1 or mxl 990

Behringer sucks... I've gotten rid of or returned every piece of gear I've had... except the behringer B1. Any singer I run through it, likes the way their voice sounds... it is also very similar sounding to the C1. So much so, that if we did a shoot out, I am sure that most everyone couldn't...

Neve Portico vs DMP3, VM Pro, Great River,

Go ahead and check out gearslutz... the person who said that had never even seen it (or used it). The majority of people on gearslutz who used it loved it with the exception of a few. The people who bash it, generally have never used it... kind of like rodger here. In any event, from...

Opinion: What Makes an Engineer Great?

This thread is really interesting... it's pretty cool. I personally find this to be a product industry... but again I guess I'm combining production and engineering... I can't really seperate them since all my favorite engineers also produce for the bands they engineer.

Opinion: What Makes an Engineer Great?

Yeah I apologize, I guess I sort of lump the two together (engineering and producing) but you are right if you were doing strictly engineering, that is not your place. I personally wouldn't want to go that route.

Opinion: What Makes an Engineer Great?

There are a good number of people who can get a good sound so assuming we are talking about engineers who get the sound you desire.... Personality (honesty, kindness, compassion, character, humor) - Number one in my book. I write probably 30-50% of most all of my clients music, work with them...

    Avalon AD2022

I have both the brick and the portico and while the portico is certainly in another league... the brick stands up there... dynamics light up with the portico but condensors sound nearly as good through the brick in my opinion. Both have a very wide big kind of sound and work well with vocals...
