Here is how i do it...is it wrong?

Didn't really like the sound of the drums...it felt a little stale and dead, maybe get some fresh heads on them? Remove some muffling? Depending on what kind of drums they are nice new bearing edges might helps as well. Especially with the kick, I'd tune to the lowest frequency you can hear...

    looking for a snare mic

I find SM57's to be good for a "thump" or "wallop" sound with a warm ring. I also have an M201 which gives me more of a focused "crack" to the sound. And lately I've been using an NT2 about 8 inches away with the diaphragm parallel to the shell and the center of the diaphragm on the same plane...

Best Kick Drum Mic Under 200$

I've had a D112 for 7 years now...it still looks brand new! Sounds great on kick, floor tom, bass cabs, guitar cabs, and is hands down THE best mic for screaming vocals. Anyways, for the past couple months I wanted something that sounded more "organic" instead of the click and basketball...

    FS/FT: Sennheiser e604 Set

For sale or trade: Three Sennheiser e604 mics. Includes microphones, clips, and mic bags. All mics are tested recently and work great. They've got some stick marks on them, but no damage at all. Awesome tom mics and actually a great alternative to SM57 on guitar. $250 + shipping. I am...

    Laptop recording options

Recently moved from desktop PC and EMU 1820 to a MacBook and Firebox. It's great...I can just unplug the AC adapter and go down to my drums and record without turning the computer off. I'd recommend the Firebox...2 preamps means that you can do all your stuff without having to screw around...

what ear do you listen through more when you mixing/mastering?

Voted both but after thinking about it, Left. I have hearing damage and in the Right it crackles if exposed to loud noises. And my desk kind of makes me sit left of center so I face my left monitor (which I use to mix in mono). But when I'm critically listening to something, I'll use both...

    logic on macbook help

Well I'm waiting for NAMM to find out if a Logic 8 is planned...I don't want to drop $300 on Logic Express if they don't un-cripple the routing scheme. Reaper is currently being released for Macs, in which case there will be one of the most efficient and powerful DAW's for only $40. Pro Tools...

    logic on macbook help

I'm running the EXACT same computer with 512 MB of RAM and Logic works over here. It has some issues because of the amount of RAM I have, but it still records and plays back just fine.

First 5 responses pick my next mic...

B! B! I still haven't miked up my snare with the 201 today and gotten some clips. But I did do some work with overheads. I've got no Beta 57's but I'll give you 57 versus 201.

    Overhead micing question???

Depends on the mics. I spent an hour this morning playing around with overhead miking. I have a pair of C4's with omni and cardioid caps. With the omni caps, I couldn't get any "modern" drum sound. It always sounded like a room mic. Very cool if compressed and run through a saturation...

    Rode?

    From a previous thread:

    I need new mics.

ART Pro Channel ($300) + Rode NT2A ($400) + Shure SM7b ($350) That would cover a lot of ground for under $1500. And you won't ever have to throw any of them away when you get more cash. Or even better, get a pair of used NT2's for $500. Then save up for a Great River, 1176, API and Neve...

How much do M201's usually go for new? There's some "knock-offs" on eBay for $100 which look exactly like mine. Thinking about selling mine but I'm going to give it one last hurray today. FWIW, I liked the M201 more than the SM57 on snare every time I used them, but I may end up liking...

    Stripping Down Mic Collection

Fantastic, well have a happy holiday and hopefully I'll be able to get one of those drum mic kits and give it a run! Know of anyone who has made any clips of the full drum mic kit?

    Stripping Down Mic Collection

Out of curiosity are the MSH-1's designed to avoid this problem? I didn't hear any distortion in any of the sound clips on the site, even on my big speakers. I know that's a concern with kick mics (especially placed just inside the hole in the front head) but should be okay on toms, correct...

What to upgrade from my AT3035..

FYI, check out Copeland's first album, "Beneath Medicine Tree." All the vocals were done with an NT-2 into an Avalon into an 1176 (straight from Aaron himself). I use it and even with cheapie pre's it sounds fantastic. I'm selling a bunch of mics and buying a second one :D Check out...

    Stripping Down Mic Collection

So you'd say the Beta 52 is a smoother mic, frequency-wise? Can you tell me if your mics are *designed* to not distort on high SPL sources? :D I made a real simple electret mic with a Panasonic capsule and it distorts like CRAZY with any SPL...even at a live show it distorts worse than a...

    Stripping Down Mic Collection

I don't really know, it's been a while. I'm going to have to give it a run this weekend when I get a few days off work. Coincidentally (and since I haven't paid much attention to mics this past year) I came across some of your mics and listened to some clips...very cool! I might have to pick...

    Naiant Drum package?

Bumping to see if anyone has used the MSH-1's on toms. Do they distort at high SPL's? How close do you have them in? Cardio or omni? Would be curious to see about getting a few of these for tom reinforcement...cheap enough that I wouldn't feel the need to get rid of them for cash :D

    Stripping Down Mic Collection

Been thinking about stripping down my mic collection. I've moved from a huge PC rig with lots of inputs and pres to a laptop with 4 inputs. I used to do a lot of recording of my bands' rehearsals, but now I'm not in one and I feel like having a dozen mics is too much. Here's what I've got...
