My new Post-Rock song Mastered, Suggestion needed!

The guitars being 100% L/R isn't unusual, and that's not the distracting part to me. It's the drums that are distracting. Even though the drum bus is panned center, there is something making them artificially wide in the mix. Click on Kontakt and look through the controls within the plugin...

My new Post-Rock song Mastered, Suggestion needed!

The drums are distractingly wide in the non-mastered version as well, so it's either baked into the samples or there has been some sort of stereo widening somewhere along the way. It sounds like the drums are panned mostly right, and just a slapback delay of the drums is on the left. The phase...

    Limiter/Compressor WHILE Recording?

As far as connecting outboard gear, I think the ways that would be accomplished would be - on the way in, via a channel insert - on the way in, via an outboard preamp, then any other line-level processors, then line input to the interface - in software, while tracking, using a VST that...

    FMR-REAL NICE COMPRESSOR CONNECTIONS

I agree that FMR are a little fuzzy when it comes to the cable requirements. The manual says to NOT use TRS cables, but I hooked mine up with TRS in and out, going to balanced connections on my interface and I didn't have any troubles. Now I've got it hooked up with an insert cable, which is...

    Are PreAmps a marketing myth?

I think he's referring to "5 Man Acoustical Jam", the live acoustic album that they did. There's a version of Love Song from that album too. That really brings me back to high school, when I listened to that album a shameful amount :)

    Control Surfaces?

I've had a 1-channel FaderPort for years now, and I still use it a lot. No novelty here, it's genuinely useful. I use it for track levels, panning, transport control, and writing automation. I still use the mouse/keyboard for everything else, like creating/naming tracks, adding FX, adjusting FX.

Why is my audio so quiet now? the only difference is I added a clap

This would be the exact effect of normalization. I agree, somewhere in the signal chain is some sort of automatic gain or normalization process. This article makes it sound like Garage Band automatically normalizes on export, and that behavior can be turned off...

    Boot hill

Yeah, everything is still over on the left. I turned off my left speaker, and the only thing on the right is bass, vocal and a teeny tiny bit of barely-audible hihat. Drums and guitar are entirely on the left side. Something funky is going on with the panning. Great guitar tone though!

How do you record nice lush vocal harmonies?

For me and my mediocre voice, its all about doubling up (or more) on each harmony part. I tend to use a darkly voiced mic and stand a little farther away than I would for a lead. I pan the doubles a little outside of center from each other (20% left/right), bus them all together and then...

Sennheiser MD 421 on sale (PSA)

That's awesome that you went straight to the Roland USA CEO. Bold move :) And hey, you got a bag of swag out of it! Fortunately it didn't come to that this time. I just got the shipping notice last night, and the mic will arrive tomorrow! Yay! It only took 4 full months. I guess that's...

Sennheiser MD 421 on sale (PSA)

Update, nearly 4 months later. My MD-421 is still on backorder. But the order is still alive, and I expect that I'll actually received this damned thing eventually. I've called Musician's Friend a couple of times, but the customer support people are pretty much powerless to do anything. They...

    Guitar / Bass Cable

I bought my first set of strap locks that same day :) As soon as I got a hold of myself after the drop, I went straight to the computer and ordered a set. I think that they're Dunlop, but I can't remember. I'm not crazy about these particular locks. The U-shaped part that attaches to the...

    Guitar / Bass Cable

I like ProCo cables a lot. Their DynaMike balanced cables have become my preferred XLR cables around my home studio. The connectors are great, the cable is great quality. Although I'm not sold on their hi-z cables. I had a 20 year old MusicMover that died in a terrifying accident involving...

How (what) to strip down Win10

I don't keep a list of what I tend to do to Win10 installs, but honestly it's not much. It tends to run well on my hardware (although I keep pretty beefy hardware). Off of the top of my head (a couple already mentioned by BH above): - Disable Cortana - Disable system sounds - Turn...

sorry guys here is a write address. What do you guys think?

Ha! I noticed that as well. I found that I even still have a profile page from way back when. Fortunately I'd removed all of my music...because the world does not need to hear the things that were coming out of my home studio circa 2004.

sorry guys here is a write address. What do you guys think?

...not to mention a link to a song hosted on NowhereRadio.com. Wow, that's some antique internettery there.

    Two PCs one interface?

In a previous incarnation of my studio, I had 2 computers (1 for gaming/general use, 1 for audio/video editing) using a single audio interface. I had spare line inputs on the audio interface, so I sent the stereo output of my "other" computer into those, and used the interface's software mixer...

Mic stand type and shock mount

I had to give up on cheap mic stands. Musician's Gear, On-Stage Stands, even Ultimate Support have all proven to be irritating to use over the long term. They get the job done in the short term, but they're just not made to last. The last stand I bought was a K&M, and it's great. The clutch...

OMG! Where To Put All This Gear?

A sliding keyboard drawer and an overbridge for the desk would go a long ways toward making space. If you do either build or buy a desk with an overbridge, just make sure that it's a standard width of 19" and a multiple of 1.75" tall, to accommodate any future rack-mountable equipment you may...

fret buzz on cheap fender acoustic

He was talking about neck relief, which is set by adjusting the truss rod. I agree, I'd start there before touching the fret height. From what you described, it sounds like the neck is either flat or has a bit of backbow. A little more relief in the neck will give the strings room to vibrate...
