18 Out with Clarett 8 Pre & OctoPre for Mixing OTB

The Clarett OctoPre does. The Scarlett OctoPre does not. Which one are we talking about? He keeps calling it a MKII, which I assumed was the Clarett.

18 Out with Clarett 8 Pre & OctoPre for Mixing OTB

Looking at the connectivity on the OctoPre MKii, you can do exactly what you want. The user manual for the OctoPre MKii is available here: https://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/85889.pdf The user manual for the Clarett 8Pre is available here...

Lexicon Alpha Pre-Amp Not Working in Skype

OK, sorry for necro-posting on a 4.5 year old thread, but I've been messing with this exact same setup today and I finally got it to work. Sure enough, Skype is only listening on input 1 from the Lexicon Alpha. I had a mic plugged into the XLR input (input 2) and while it would work in Reaper...

On a tight budget, need a good mic for vocals + acoustic guitar

The MXL900 will be fine. It's too bad that they went up in price to $100 because at their previous price of $60 they were pretty much untouchable. For $100 also consider the AT2020 and the previously mentioned SM57/58 (dynamics, yes. But solid workhorses nonetheless). If you can stretch...

    Too much reverb

For compression, you'll have to play with the attack/release, threshold and ratio to find what you're looking for. There aren't really any hard and fast rules about applying compression. If the results sound too compressed, try a lower ratio and back off on the threshold. Also a faster attack...

    Microphone for recording

The Blue Yeti and Yeti Pro do, indeed, have a true stereo mode. It can be used either via USB, or via the split XLR cable that come with the microphone. It'll just require you to create a stereo track in your DAW, or 2 mono tracks that are panned 100% apart.

    I'm confused about audio interfaces

No worries, these things aren't immediately obvious when you're just starting out. An audio interface essentially becomes your sound card. It handles your audio inputs (from instruments and microphones) and outputs (to speakers and headphones). Some interfaces also have 5-pin MIDI inputs and...

New backup using too much storage

I had to ditch the Windows backup because of this exact reason. It uses an unreasonable amount of storage, and it's not smart about how it chooses what and when to back up. I mainly depend on WD SmartWare since I back up to a WD MyCloud NAS. It's certainly not perfect (tends to chew up CPU...

Degraded sound quality after downloading and converting

VLC should do the trick. Sometimes the audio codec is limited by which video codec is chosen. I think that Quicktime has an option for 24 bit PWM for a lossless conversion. Then you can use something like Reaper to convert to V0 or 320 kbps MP3.

Whats the best Silent Computer for Recording...Fan-less vs no power supply?

The computer nerd in me says to get a new system because a 2nd gen i3 is really long in the tooth in 2019. But if it's serving your needs, maybe just a good aftermarket cooler would solve the noise issue. If your chassis has room, the Hyper 212 Evo from Cooler Master plus a Noctua NF-F12 fan...

Buying a good condenser for the studio

Once I bought a Lewitt LCT 440, my Avantone CV-12 hasn't even been out of it's case. Plus I no longer have room for the external power supply for a tube mic like the CV-12, so that adds to the layer of dust gathering on my Avantone's box. The CV-12 is a good mic, and I like it's smooth high...

Whats the best Silent Computer for Recording...Fan-less vs no power supply?

Go into your BIOS and see what all fan profile options are available. Usually there are options for silent, eco, performance, turbo, full speed, etc. Try the silent profile and use something like RealTemp to monitor temps as it idles, and when it's under load. If your mobo doesn't have...

Is DPC Latency The Same As Recording Latency? (Dell Laptop Question)

What size is your ASIO buffer set to? And what in/out latency are your ASIO drivers reporting in your DAW? DPC latency is more a function of the CPU than the drivers. If you're experiencing audible latency, that'd most likely be a symptom of having the ASIO buffer set too large. Find the...

    Home recording gear

A Shure SM57 and a Behringer UMC22 would run about $140 total and would yield good results. Find an XLR cable and a mic stand and you'd be set to record electric guitar through an amp.

    Using multiple interfaces

24 tracks! That must've been that one time that you recorded Terry Bozzio's drum kit :)

    Using multiple interfaces

There is a way to make an aggregate device in Windows, but it relies on using non-ASIO drivers so your latency will be intolerably high. And then there's clock sync, which the UR44 doesn't have a way of controlling. Honestly, I'd sell both UR44s and buy a single UR824 to meet your needs. I...

    Collaboration via email

If you've got a bunch of clutter from forgetting to create sub directories for your projects, and all of your different project's media files are living in a giant mess of files in the same folder, there is a great way to sort it all out: - one by one, open each project in Reaper - Click...

    Microphone Options for Video Recording

A little more detail about what you're doing and what you expect to hear will help. What about your current sound do you not like? What are you looking to improve about the sound? Do you have guests, or do you just need to mic yourself?

Recording Electric Rock Guitars - Fizzy, Harsh Rubbish.

Can you post an example? I can't imagine that an 18i20 and an SM57 would produce an undesirable result unless something is really out of whack. Record a snippet that exhibits the qualities that you mention and we can probably come up with some meaningful suggestions.

Leaving Mic Idle w/ Phantom Power

I think that the SM81 sitting next to me has been phantom powered for about 8 days so far (this time around), so I too hope it's not an issue. This thing has lived for over 30 years so far, so I can only assume that this isn't the worst thing that it's seen in its lifetime. If anybody sees a...
