    Cheap Kick Mics

I wouldn't say you should skimp on drum mics, certainly not for the kick and snare. Get something respectable for those two and then at least you've got a decent base.

Question: about Mic to use for drums in my basement

You really need some condensers for the overheads and then use the 57s for the top and bottom of the snare. Get a D112 or an equivalent for the kick and then you'll be heading in the right direction.

Suggestions for overhead mics and high hat mic?

Don't bother miking the hat, unless you're playing very quiet music and the drummer is a master at getting great dynamics out of it.

annoying kidkage potential studio build thread

I think you'll do fine if you get the room treated properly. That brick wall might even work in your favour if you want to make some sort of isolated vocal booth-type area. You'd need some type of board or something that you could put up or take down depending on the situation.

    "School"?

Within a couple of days at music college, I think one of the tutors said to the whole class, "based on the averages, only one of you will make it in music". We started with about forty students and were down to twenty within two weeks. Only five finished the course and even less actually passed...

Need to know what overhead mics to use for drums.

AKG C430s are fairly good, though they don't look it!

    Using limiters on drums

To the OP, what is it that makes it sound cack, the kit or the drummer?

Mic'ing drums in the same room.

Maybe the OP means that even if he had somebody to play the kit, he wouldn't be able to get a clear listen on headphones with all the noise? Who knows.

    Panning drums and guitars

Where you pan the overheads is more of a concern when thinking about panning guitars!

Mic'ing drums in the same room.

You could get someone else to play the kit (or hit it at least) while you mess around, but yeah, the move the mic, record, check back, move it again thing is so tedious.

How do the drums influence the arrangement of a song ?

    Depends on the song ;)

How do the drums influence the arrangement of a song ?

When you have players of the quality of those two in the band though, they don't want to be sidemen. I guess with my original statement I meant it more in reference to less-skilled players.

How do the drums influence the arrangement of a song ?

Yeah that's the problem with bands, unless there's a degree of success or money coming in, the "backing" musicians (drummer, bassist, rhythm guitar) are not so content to be advised on what to play.

How do the drums influence the arrangement of a song ?

Yeah there are alot of bar drummers out there who play for themselves, rather than the song. The problem with the drummer having a strong idea for how the drums should go is that more often than not, the music needs to be virtually rewritten to accommodate the changes. Obviously that conflicts...

General advice on a space I am about to rent

Is the location isolated enough that you won't disturb anyone, or that the recordings won't pick up passing cars or people on the street?

I just cannot play with a click

If you want retain a "live" feel but still want the tightness of playing to a click, it can actually be beneficial to have the click on at a low volume, but set it without an accent on the first beat of each bar. That way you can hear the click ticking, but it if you slide out, it's no big deal...

Looking for the sweet spot in a room

Have you got your amp on a crate or anything? If you haven't, getting it up off the floor can make a difference. If it's a 4x12 or something then don't worry!
