    How similar are these Compressors?

hi, RE: the FX Cakewalk Compressor (from my 2002 Homestudio) and the Sonitus Ultrafunk compressor... how different are they ? The names obviously, and I think Ultrafunk has a rep on its own... I ask because I'm dabbling in chaining compressors over whole mix stereo files and I've been told...

    Quickie on the Low End

Simple question on Low EQ hi, this is my biggest problem. Whats been happening is that I think I've killed so much low end on my mixes that everthing sounds shallow and tight. I really got into my own EQ's and had ignored the EQ's done by our engineer, since his seemed too boomy. Now I've gone...

    Tight, dull, shallow, hard

Aha yes, thanks; I'm starting to think I rely too much on reference CD's and not enough on sounding like us- minus any stupid rookie engineering mistakes that is. I am indeed going to get into the room problem after this CD is done for sure.

What did I do this time #3

ahhh OK thanks thre must be something in the original project thats causing this ! I've had this kind of thing happen where theres some clip on some random track that makes everything go haywire. I deleted the track or move it and then its all ok  This time I thought it was re-naming...

Not a clip but a question aimed at you

Thanks Jake- I think I'm just about ready to put up something from our band's CD once I get done with revision #2 on all the tunes. Major revisions in the low end, and alot of other stuff was simplified. I think it'll take 3 or 4 rounds and then I'll just have to walk away. Its just for fun and...

Not a clip but a question aimed at you

Thanks alot for the note My reason for putting it here was precisely to get an idea of the everyday home-recording problems the regulars hear from everyones stuff =here= on this forum. THanks /edit/ I don't want to push other peoples stuff off the front page, I'll just let this one die off...

Not a clip but a question aimed at you

hi, I was just doing a search for the keyword "harsh" in this forum, thinking I'd learn some info off other peoples problems, got 500 matches. Still perusing . But, I figured with so many uses of the word "harsh" there may be =some= info you can share when you hear a full mix that is harsh. On...

What did I do this time #3

hi, you may remember my classic threads "What did I do... #1 and #2  as the artist ALANFC this is a new weird thing that happened I couldn't find an answer for. Its not serious and I have worked around it but I'm curious. Does Sonar 3 not take kindly to renaming projects ? I was...

Do you ever gate the Toms at the mixing stage?

thanks for all the ideas folks- in the end I have ended up keeping the tom mic tracks up and not using a gate after all! I have copied/pasted/bounced the key hits on to their own stereotrack called "drum accents". The little castanette cymbal and a few crashes here& there also live on this...

    monitor placement

this is good I'd like to try this But I have my monitors speakers upright, like stereo speakers. The woofer is pointed at my chest and the tweeter is in line with my ears. I will try the new direction =past = me for sure. But, with little space, turning and raising my monitors so that the woofer...

    vocals/compression/preramps/maximizer

I have a simple setup of the VTB-1 Preamp going into an RNC. No issues with levels or control. Way more volume than I would ever need .Love simple stuff! The RNC gives alot of variety for me.

Do you ever gate the Toms at the mixing stage?

umm scuse me but our drummer came over to my studio (ok my desk in my bedroom) and laid down some sweeeet cowbell parts for a couple of these songs. I don't think our fans (family) will want to hear much more of it ! I can't wait to mix them in big n loud. He had a little calf-bell on one goofy...

Do you ever gate the Toms at the mixing stage?

Wow thanks ! indeed, up till I had this bright idea about the gate.. I had been going in with volume envelopes (Sonar) and goosing the cool parts. On the Tom mic tracks and the overheads. Doesn't sound too unnatural. I can hear that gated sound in my head right now though ! I...

Do you ever gate the Toms at the mixing stage?

hey - I have a great drummer and want his toms action, but when I crank the two toms tracks (1 mic for upper, 1 mic for floor), I get alotta snare. And this snare is diffused left and right along with my toms panning. I was thinking of trying a gate on the toms only to get the real toms action...
