Mics far apart - phase adj in post

I was calculating a resulting distance of about 5m because among the few things I know (or I think I know :-P ) about mic placement is that 3-1 rule... so I was trying not to get the two mics too close, albeit "virtually". I had a plan of the venue, but there is no scale on that plan, so it's...

Mics far apart - phase adj in post

Thanks all... I tried different delays and was satisfied with around 55ms for the mic nearer to the soloists. @mixsit sharp transients are a rare thing in this recording... bowed instruments only, no percussions, no pianos, no pizzicato etc. @ashcat can't rep+ you yet

Mics far apart - phase adj in post

Hi, I've recorded a string orchestra concert in a small auditorium. There were a couple of pieces with soloists, and I used an NT2A for accents. I was forced to put my Zoom H4n in the stage direction platform, quite far from the stage, for security reasons (every other place it would have been...

Best "visual feedback" workflow for overdubbing?

Well, the interface was ok for me and generally the program was well-thought out. I remember an error (it was some time ago), and remember googling that error and a suggestion about disabling hw acceleration, and that didn't work. I messed with it a little bit more (forum threads, google...

Best "visual feedback" workflow for overdubbing?

I tried a trial version once. Couldn't figure for the life of me out how to render/export, tried everything, IIRC it was a video-card related issue... Apart from that I'm really not a big fan of Sony... it's a brand I associate with (maybe even superior) tech which is not compatible with...

Best "visual feedback" workflow for overdubbing?

Sorry for the late reply. It looks doable. I would have preferred an audio-oriented solution, but if it works... The alternative could be to record the video on a camcorder/cellphone/tablet and the audio on a usb audio interface (i.e. on the multitrack) and then play back the video with the...

Best "visual feedback" workflow for overdubbing?

You know, when we play in a quartet it's some kind of a feedback loop... Say there's one melodic part, and three accompaniment parts (it's more complex than this 99% of the time). The ones who play the accompaniment follow the "solo", but it's also the "solo" who dynamically changes the way he...

Best "visual feedback" workflow for overdubbing?

Hi, I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so after a little pondering I thought I'd ask here. Click track is fine for certain kinds of music, but won't cut it for classical music (rit., rall., acc., a tempo, colla parte, rubato...). I need to have a visual feedback i.e. me giving myself the...

What is the best, most affordable recording gear I can buy?

I'd not rule out external recorders just because of the synch issues, many modern video editors allow you to synch an external audio track automagically (by comparing waveforms), and it usually works ok. No need for wordclocks or audio jacks, plus you have the added benefit of keeping the two...

What is the best, most affordable recording gear I can buy?

Worst complain for the Zooms is preamp noise, but hell are they versatile! It depends a lot on what you're going to do. I've seen a pro video of a pro mountain biker shot with a neck-slung H4n plus a strange bulky contraption of an omni mike for ambient sounds. The sound to that video are...

    A question about phase

At least mine were 24 polite and, in some cases, even helpful posts (I try to be a giver when I can). Sorry if you find my retort inappropriate, but I do believe that I have the right to reply to someone who's obviously trolling (or just had a bad hair day). It always works out one way or...

    A question about phase

Aaah thanks for this informative input, a new perspective indeed... That (the component of single instruments in the various mics is something I never thought of...) Edit must spread rep before giving it to you... anyway thanks again! 11 posts and you join a discussion only to make a nuisance...

    A question about phase

In this case I recorded in XY and mixed a single accent mic (soloists) to both channels (slightly panned to the left to match real-life & the video), hence my question. I also kept the volume of that single mic quite high, even though it's lower than the other.

    Budget dynamic mic...

Oh my, one of the "sake of the form" editing I made actually erased the whole thing, ah well... The gist of it: 2i2, Sennheiser HD457 (at least decent equipment) it was obvious that it was a single take, exact match I meant: "was room+instrument sound+your playing more similar to left or...

Guitar Tones From Guitar Rig 5

Yours is fine if the files are fine ;-) I can't recall where I read it but there was this forum where some users where complaining and others wheren't so I guess it depends on the single instrument (some have higher output levels). I also have a 2i2 but only use it for mics. Having a Zoom h4n I...

    A question about phase

...which is an impossibility in the case of an orchestra since it is not a punctiform sound source... I guess each section, even each single instrument will get different frequencies cancelled, so it looks to me that there are just too many variables in order to make any quick, meaningful...

    Budget dynamic mic...

Listening through ear plugs from the lcd display jack (ewww, I know, but not at home presently) I like the left channel better: sound is more round/warm and has more bass, while right channel sounds somewhat harsher. Should have heard you playing live in order to judge if your playing was more...

    A question about phase

Hi, I've recorded an orchestra with soloists using a far-away Zoom h4n plus a Rode Nt2-a in cardioid mode (about 1.5m from the soloists, space was cramped), and was thinking about phase. Sound travels at about 343m/s in normal conditions, right? So if the mics were 10m distant the direct sound...
