how did you get your first good mic?

I was working sound for some theater production (I don't remember why we were using those 57s...) back in high school. One of them wasn't working, so my teacher told me to either throw it out or fix it in my spare time. So I took it home and re-soldered some of the internall wires. My first...

What would YOU do? Real world scenario...

Can we make the assumption of only using the compressors (and EQ?) later. Routing options would be nice as well - what mixer and recording medium are we using? Are overdubs possible? Bouncing? Assuming 8 tracks, in a "live" setup: Drums: Overheads: NT 5s. If those suck try the Neumanns...

    Stronger boom stand?

Get a heavy base for boom stands. After that, get something that doesn't slip vertically. And always keep a roll of duct tape handy to either lock down the base or lock in the vertical/horizontal adjustments.

That's one of the saddest stories I've heard in a long time.

The best Soundcard for the DM-24!!!

I've got a mixtreme that is functioning very well right now. I like the accurate EQ, but it overloads more easily thatn most other digital EQs. It's a little tough to figure out the routing, but once you do...

    How Long Does it Last?

hmmm...my Yamaha SCSI burner is well over a year old with absolutley no problems. Actually, I've got a 7 year old PC that still has the original CD-ROM in it. The only CD drive I've had go out on me is the one in this laptop. Although it still works if you give it the right love. Seems...

Best Bang for the Buck Hall of Fame

I'd say the sm 57 and the RNC all the way. Cool Edit Pro is a pretty good deal as well. I saw one of these threads a year or two ago, and someone mentioned Mexican P-Basses. Although I'm pretty finicky about recording bass (not to mention my own), I'd have to agree. Strings too. For under...

    Dm24

I love it. It's was tough to figure out the routing at first, but once you figure it out it's pretty easy. Between the Mixtreme, Nuendo, and the DM-24, I have far to many routing options. Templates are my best friend. And the built in EQ sounds great, really clean and accurate...just don't...

    Whats a good vocal mic?

I love my KSM 32, even on vocals. It definately has a pretty neutral sound though. But it's great on guitars, bass drum, and bass cabs. It's the only LD condensor I have right now, so when I use it on vocals sometimes I use a little boost or cut of EQ to bring out the goodness.

    Dm24

I've got one hooked up to my PC with a Mixtreme. My power supply died yesterday, but a new one should be here soon. This kind of ticked me off since this is the second time I've been left stranded because of it. The first time was just a simple OS upgrade that didn't work. And another pair...

Pair of Rode NT5's or SM81 and AKGC3000?

Audio Technica 4041 was my choice over SM 81s. The 4041s fit better with the styles of music I do and my gear, not to mention my own production style. It was pretty much a toss up though. If the 4041s weren't a little cheaper I definately would have gone with the Shures. I haven't tried the...

recording amp feedback in a quiet place

Record it while your neighbors are gone during the day. Or talk to them a day or two ahead of time and let them know you're going to be loud. I've found most people are pretty forgiving as long as they are informed ahead of time and can plan for it.

Minimizing Cymbal bleed on tom tracks

It's a miserable endeavor. But I have a few suggestions that might work: Use mic placement to your advantage. Try to find the spots that pick up the drum OK, but minimize cymbals. Hyper or super-cardioid mics might help as they only pick up sources that are close (supposedly...you have to...

How do studios get that snare sound?

Best response I've ever seen. Anyways, in order of importance, imo: 1.) the Player 2.) The drum 3.) Tuning 4.) Heads I bought a kit about six months ago, and by far, the smartest thing I've done is to find the head that worked best for my drum and tuned it to my liking. Evans heads didn't...

    Mic recommendations for acoustic guitar

Back to the original question: Shure KSM32. Back it off anywhere from an inch to a foot or so, and roll off the lows. Wroks for a variety of situations and styles, for me.

    Best mic under $15.00

Rich, you're a dick. :) (like you haven't heard that one before) I built this little mic out of a headphone driver from Parts Express. Makes for weird, usable bass drum hits for experimental rock. It's also useful for some backup vocal stuff. I just tape it into a corner and scream/yell into...

    polarity on sm57s

lol. :) Whoever told you that, go kick him in the nads. Sometimes a 57 will rattle though, so a little glue or tape is in order, but otherwise don't worry about it.
