Something to just capture ideas and stuff but good enough that I can save and mix the good stuff if needed. I have a zoom such and such with effects and on board drum machine but for me, it's super complicated to figure out. And the effects are harsh and unnatural. Looking for something simple...
Good info here. Makes sense. I suppose the time it would take to learn another daw could be spend writing a song with what I have already. After all, I have already invested time in reaper. So far, I've been composing and arranging in audition because it's easy and I'm used to it. I mainly use...
It seems like alot of daws claim to be intuitive and easy to learn.... Tracktion looks interesting. I cut my teeth on Adobe audition, which I like but it's kinda buggy, at least the version I have. I've been using reaper, which does alot but... Well, it does alot, more than I need. I like...
As far as EQ, u can find cheat sheets online, like what frequencies help with warmth, brightness, air etc. For me, warmth is usually accomplished with harmonic distortion more than eq. Tube and tape plugins help alot. Variety of sound has a free one, several actually.
I'm not sure what THEY did exactly, in the past I've found some insider info on bands and songs that I liked by looking up online magazines, like sound on sound. One trick I discovered was when u double an electric guitar and pan, make one slightly different, maybe one kind of amp on one...
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I'd be better off getting a USB 2.0 interface instead, the last thing I need is a head ache. I wish pcie cards weren't so expensive because those seem to be the best as far as latency, some even have dsp effects. What ever happened to emu? Heh..
A friend of mine is selling his firewire interface and I'm interested but my computer doesn't have a firewire connection. I thought about getting a firewire card to make it work, would that work or would it cause latency or driver issues? Is usb 2.0 faster anyway?
When I see pictures of studios with multiple sets of monitors, I wonder if they are there to hear how a mix will translate in different speakers or are they all playing at once to maybe get a more broad frequency spectrum? If I were to set up multiple monitors are there rules on how far away...
Depending on what u want to use them for there's a million drum loops out there covering every possible genre imaginable. Alot of free ones too. The more u learn, the more u can cut them up and make them do what u want them to do. It's a good place to start
I've heard a lot of good things about Linux, some being its great on computer recorces, u don't need an Antivirus and it's free. I've been wanting to check it out for a while but it's kind of overwhelming, for one, it's a whole new environment heck, even a whole new language (what the heck...
Thanks. The commercial stuff is essentially just a dense piece of foam right? It makes sense that a couple pieces of acoustic foam would do the same thing. What do u mean by tweeters I'm the lug position? Now that I think about it I think I've seen speakers turned upside down in some studio pics...
I've been working on this for weeks and I FINALLY got it figured out so I thought I'd share in case anyone else had a problem like this :
Been working on a song, tracks came from a friend who lives far away. He printed the bass line with reverb. SWAMPED In reverb, which sounds good on its own...
Yeah, turns out it was something on my desk vibrating. Took a while to find it, heh. Put my hand on everything one by one till I discovered it was a picture frame, thank God it's not my speakers. Thanks for the help, everyone. I'm really digging this forum, people actually are eager to help...
LOL, nice. Monty python fan me' self. Yeah, that guy.... He's a great musician, he's just used to the days of analog recording, I'm trying to get him to realize he doesn't need to push things in the digital world
That's the gospel truth right there. I've been working on some stems that a friend if mine did, been trying to fix them for weeks just to make them usable. He recorded them way to hot, bleed from the headphones, printed with reverb.... Sigh.... Yeah, if the original signal is good, mixing...
Good replies. The measurements aren't bad, I'm just always looking to improve. Of course I don't want to create a whole new set of problems. So far reference tracks have helped alot, along with just knowing my speakers. I've heard that listening at lower volumes during mixing can make it to...
I agree with that too. After simple adjustments to levels and panning, your mix should sound at least pretty good on is own. Effects are meant to enhance an already good signal, not make a crappy recording sound good, although that can be done in some cases.
