Sounds good so far. Bass/kick are working well in my opinion. I fall into the write the lyrics / vocal melody first group. But as long as your vocal range fits the chord progression I say go for it. A progression can have a million melodies but your brain will decide which way to go in the end.

What school is this for? A good teacher would walk you through this step by step, showing you the answers, then give you a similar assignment to which you can apply the techniques. I hope you don't pay money for this....

My friend has an AKG XLS - now that has warmth. Run it through a Focusrite pre. I have to trim a lot off the bottom end to mix it.

There's no shortcuts, you have to work at it and buy really expensive gear. I'm sure M&M didn't record in his bedroom.

Get a different mic, pre, compressor and interface. I'm not a fan of any of them and have used them all in the past. I'm sure everyone will pile on with eq suggestion etc etc etc for what you have so YMMV in advance.

I edit the raw track and reverb is applied during the mix. If you've recorded with reverb on then yes you have to be a little careful with the reverb tails.

I can see when a shield would reduce some of the vocal reflections. After doing some research, I decided to add treatment behind me which seems to work well when recording. I use closed back headphones K271's or something and I get a tiny bit of bleed which is only audible when I solo the vocal...

Breath sounds are subjective. I edit them out all the time. They are a matter of personal preference.

Mastering a Stereo track? Since you've mentioned in the past that you avoid using any compression or limiters on your main bus.... You may want to send the ME an initial song so he/she can determine whether there are any glowing faults in the mix. Why waste your time if there are things an ME...
