    The New Tone Thread

Yada yada yada, stop whining and start a new thread. The new thread button is not broken. Robus keeps whining but never seems to press the button either. Oh never mind I see Armistice has already built you one. Funny, it already has nonsense in it. That's a shame, there shouldn't be any...

    The New Tone Thread

Maybe you should direct that negativity in the direction of the person who started the issue. The same person who started the whining about the thread in the first place: Go ahead and start posting in a new thread, I'm anxious to see whether there's going to be as many meaningful, insightful...

    The New Tone Thread

Well Robus, it looks like you're hell bent on destroying one of the best threads this forum has ever had. You've once again demonstrated your lack of community spirit, along with a desire to manipulate this board into your very own playground. It's appalling, but not surprising, given what I've...

    New Untitled Tune

Sounds good so far. Bass/kick are working well in my opinion. I fall into the write the lyrics / vocal melody first group. But as long as your vocal range fits the chord progression I say go for it. A progression can have a million melodies but your brain will decide which way to go in the end.

    Drum mixing, any suggestions?

What school is this for? A good teacher would walk you through this step by step, showing you the answers, then give you a similar assignment to which you can apply the techniques. I hope you don't pay money for this....

    Warming vocal

My friend has an AKG XLS - now that has warmth. Run it through a Focusrite pre. I have to trim a lot off the bottom end to mix it.

    UAD compressors from Waves

So does Cakewalk (CA2A). I have an LA610 which sounds better than the plugins - YMMV.

So how do I learn it?

There's no shortcuts, you have to work at it and buy really expensive gear. I'm sure M&M didn't record in his bedroom.

    Warming vocal

Get a different mic, pre, compressor and interface. I'm not a fan of any of them and have used them all in the past. I'm sure everyone will pile on with eq suggestion etc etc etc for what you have so YMMV in advance.

    Vocal isolation shield

I edit the raw track and reverb is applied during the mix. If you've recorded with reverb on then yes you have to be a little careful with the reverb tails.

    Vocal isolation shield

I can see when a shield would reduce some of the vocal reflections. After doing some research, I decided to add treatment behind me which seems to work well when recording. I use closed back headphones K271's or something and I get a tiny bit of bleed which is only audible when I solo the vocal...

    Evolutin of a Vocal

Breath sounds are subjective. I edit them out all the time. They are a matter of personal preference.

Tall Order with Nick and Dave

Mastering a Stereo track? Since you've mentioned in the past that you avoid using any compression or limiters on your main bus.... You may want to send the ME an initial song so he/she can determine whether there are any glowing faults in the mix. Why waste your time if there are things an ME...

How big do nearfield speakers need to be?

That's one small room for mixing. If it's not treated I can imagine a lot of reflections of the walls. I can only recommend what I know works for me. YMMV. I have TR8's, which cost me about $600 years ago. They're ok, nice and flat with an 8" woofer. My first thought is to keep mixing on HP...

    Outboard Gear Processing setup

I own an outboard channel strip that includes an eq, compressor and a direct in (which is good for bass). I used to record vocals directly to my interface but took the plunge and started recording mic-channel strip-interface. It took only a few recordings to figure out what sounded best with my...
