Those reels do look like they may be a little large but my fisrt thought was did the reel tables get pushed in from being shipped or something. Could you send a pic of the front of the machine with out the Reels on it? Take the shot at a angle so we can see if that is the case.

I would be afraid of using old Radio shack tape on a 388. If it does have any sticky shed it could pull your motors down to a crawl and maybe even burn them up besides clogging your heads up with tape goo. At this stage of the game your only choise for new tape is the lpr35 on that link you...

Sounds like your mastering house screwed up. Call them up and tell them what happen. Could be when they put it into the computer they messed up. Dont just let it go.

Or you could just plug your bass into the 1/4 inch mic input on your m3 mixer and go direct. And play with the 800hz eq

Also did you have the knobs on your 22 set at 7 when you mixed into it? If these where set to low could be a reason you have some noise.

I just bought a nos roll of Maxell ud off ebay and I going to see how it sounds on the 22-4. Maybe picking up a few rolls of if would be a better way to go. It cant hurt and it doesnt cost that much. After all we are just home recordist trying to have a little fun.

I just thought of that before you posted. The 22 was a teac with the first models and that could be where the confusion comes in. So is your recorder a teac or a tascam? I know the two machines look the same but just maybe there are some differences in the two.

I am sure you would be fine as long as the size of the area the tape raps around is the same on both reels.

Are you sure you have the 22 series manual cause I have both the 22-2 maual and the 22-4 manual and they both say 407 tape. 456 is a 1.5 mil tape and biased at 250. Both machines manuals say they do not recommend 1.5 mil tape for the 22-4 or 22-2
