    The Interface Upgrade Thing:

A big regret in my life was selling my Quad 405 amp before moving to Australia,

Is there any behringer gear that is "good"?

Ah! What a difference 10 years can make!

    The Interface Upgrade Thing:

I've never used a Presonus Audiobox but is there anything you can identify in your recordings that you can put down to an inferior interface? The A to D (and D to A) section of the interface probably has the smallest affect on the quality of the sound. What CAN make a difference is the...

    Comfortable fader length?

Just as an example, my digital mixer has 48 channels but only 16 faders (plus a master). The faders are switchable in 4 "layers" which give 3 layers of 16 inputs plus a fourth when gives 8 Aux sends and 8 buses. That said, for live use, "fader per channel" mixers are becoming more popular even...

drop down or look up in mic description

I went to the online description for the Genesis and couldn't find those phrases.

    Comfortable fader length?

You'll find that the most common standard length on pro mixers is 100 millimetres (around 4 inches). You should get a good choice of faders at this size and it's certainly long enough to make precise changes, especially if you set you gain structure to work in the "sweet spot" around the zero mark.

    good 80's/90's analog consoles/mixers.

A +1 from me to DDA and Midas, both lovely sounding (though except for the Venice which I don't recommend, you might have trouble finding one small/light enough). The reason for my caution on the Venice is that mixing on 75mm faders can be a pain when you're used to 100mm. Two other mixers...

    Need more mics inputs

Speaking as one who owns 2 ADA8000 units, I probably wouldn't recommend them for studio work. The pre-amps (in my experience get noticeably noisy above about 3/4 level. I can use them for live work because they tend to get the outputs of radio mics which are a nice high level. An out of the...

    Limiter vs. Compression

Must admit that when mixing in the home studio, I rarely bother with make up gain--I use either of the two methods I mentioned above. However, when mixing live, I usually WILL use make up gain just to make sense of my gain structure.

    Limiter vs. Compression

Limiters and compressors both perform a similar function. It's fair to say that any compressor (or any decent one) can also act as a limiter but a limiter probably doesn't have the right controls to be a compressor. However, it's simply the lack of some of the adjustments that make that...

    Barely any sound pick up?!

Back to fundamentals...what are you recording? The PG48 is a relativity low sensitivity/low output mic. It's designed for live stage use on vocals where the singer is nice and loud and has to reject a lot of stage wash. It's not good at quieter, more subtle sources. Add to that, Alesis...

    Limiter vs. Compression

At the most basic, compressors and limiters are the same thing. The big difference is that a limiter just chops off levels at a predetermined point. A compressor chops of the levels but then applies "make up gain" to bring you levels back up but with a compressed dynamic range. The trick with...

Should I buy a stage monitor or ???

Yup. A small practice amp would likely have some form of the reverb, distortion, etc. effects that a bigger performance amp has. A stage monitor is just a stage monitor. It'll be designed more for high volume levels and a reasonably tight dispersion pattern. It's pretty common to use lots of...

Upgrade help from PC to iMac

' I know this was meant in jest but nowadays the differences in performance between Windows and Apple are negligible, particularly if you keep the PC nice and clean...i.e. free of tons of rubbish programmes. Even if you need to upgrade your computer, I'd go with a top notch Windows machine...

Condenser or Dynamic Mic for Podcast?

I know this is an old thread but it came to mind while I was archiving some recordings just now. A show I did before Christmas had a huge number of pre recorded voices and, for all sorts of logistics reasons, I had to record people where they were, not in my studio. Because of the conditions...

    ID this mic?

Worth adding that, if your interest is because of the sound, mics used in videos to simulate a studio are rarely the ones actually used for the recording.

    ID this mic?

There are lots of mics that look pretty similar but it could be one of the variants of a Neumann U47.

What do we call the music sheet of the maestro?

I've always heard it referred to as "The Score" or sometimes the conductor's score.

    Need help choosing my microphone!

Scarlett are known for their interfaces (which tend to be pretty good) but are not a manufacturer of microphones or headsets. From the picture, it looks very much like a generic design from a Chinese factory who make lots of mics and label them with whatever manufacturer name has ordered them...

    Need help choosing my microphone!

You're going to need, at a minimum, a microphone, mic stand, XLR cable, and an audio interface. Depending what you already have, you may need a decent set of closed back headphones. Finally, you'll need audio software on your computer. If you want the "easy way" the Focusrite bundle would get...
