Which audio interface should I invest in?

My iO2 (Actually an M-track but they're the same interface with a different label) is fine with low output dynamics. Yes I have to turn it all the way up, but there's still no noticeable noise. Note that I'm aiming for record levels in the recommended -18dB(FS) average and peaks between -12...

    Starting Over

Okay let's see... First you need a computer. It doesn't need to be fancy in a gamer's sense, but (since you have a budget go for something with a good fast processor and plenty of RAM. A large HDD is a great idea plus as large an SSD drive as you are willing to spend money on for the OS and...

    Experiences with mic shields?

First off, I guess I should ask whether you're talking about basic pop shields to go in front of the mic (between the vocalist and the mic) or the sort of acoustic shield Gtoboy is talking about? If the latter I've had very good results with the original sE Reflexion Filter. I originally got...

    reducing bleed through

There's no magic way to eliminate all bleed. You're using two fairly sensitive mics only a foot or two apart. However a couple of things you can do to help. First, since both are cardioid mics, make use of the pickup patterns. Locate the vocal mic slightly below the mouth, angled upwards...

Suggestion for Canon camera mic for sopranos?

From your brief description (recording sopranos) the singing is the most important part of the recording and needs to be treated as such. The key is to get the mic in nice and close. Whether you do this with extension cables or shooting "double system" ie. with a separate recorder, you want...

    compression question

If it's just a few vocal spikes, you could indeed use a compressor. Just be careful with you setting so only the unwanted peaks are lopped off without hitting the rest of the dynamic range.

    Sennheiser MKE 400

I'll have to second Arcaxis' last paragraph On camera microphones--even high quality shotguns--rarely give very good sound quality on anything beyond a bit of location atmosphere. Other, better options are things like putting your shotgun on a fishpole and have somebody else get the mic (in a...

    My Protools setup is fine.

A lot of it comes down to personal choice i used Protools for a number of years at work. Despite many hours a day using it for real plus a formal training course at Protools. I never came to actually LIKE the user interface. i could make it do what I wanted but never enjoyed it. That's the...

    How Do I......?

If you go with the 2i2 you'll notice a switch marked "Direct Monitoring". When this is on, your headphones will get a mix of your live mic plus whatever is coming from your computer. Latency will be near zero because the mic signal is being grabbed in the interface before it makes a round trip...

My Shure SM58 sounds worse than my Samsung Galaxy S7 Mic... Fix?

I have to say that, although it takes experimentation, my money would be on the noise being caused by the MXL getting noisy when cranked up to handled a low output dynamic. I'd see if I could borrow some other gear and experiment before running off and buying a new mic to use with the MXL.

Question about using effects while recording

You haven't given details of your gear but some interfaces have separate controls for headphone levels that don't affect the level being recorded. If you can't do this with yours, get a cheap headphone amp (Behringer have a basic one down around $30) and use that to control your headphone...

My Shure SM58 sounds worse than my Samsung Galaxy S7 Mic... Fix?

A couple of things to consider: First, the SM58 is the most counterfeited microphone in the world. Are you positive yours is real, i.e. did it come from a reputable supplier or a dodgy online purchase. FYI, Shure used to have a section of their site to help you identify counterfeits--might be...

    Distant, walkie talkie effect?

I also can't view your link but... In Audition, have a play with Effects/Filters and EQ/FFT Filter and try the Telephone Receiver preset. If that's too much processing, try Effects/Filters and EQ/Parametric EQ and have a go at the "Old time Radio" preset. If you need a bit more crapulising...

    FOH mixer

I had to look up "ProPresenter" on Google and have to say I was shocked at the cost. It would in theory be possible to have two programmes open on a computer at the same time provided you can stick to system sound cards/drivers like MME on Windows or making a composite device using Core Audio...

    Mic Hissing

Time for some reality. Cheap mics are noisy compared to better ones. Realtek sound chips installed in computers also add noise (hiss) to a signal, especially when the levels are turned way up because cheap mics also tend to have low level outputs. To be rude, any solutions that try to help...

    Radio/megaphone like vocals?

What software are you using to mix? With the possible exception of Audacity, I can't think of one that doesn't have a compressor. However, if you really don't have one, there are tons of free VSTs out there. A quick Google will find you hundreds but here's a site that claims to list the best...

Which audio interface should I invest in?

I'm not a Xenyx fan but, frankly, with a budget of only $150 you're not going to find a huge improvement. The Alesis i02 would fit within your budget and has the MIDI that you need. The preamps are nice and quiet and fairly neutral so that might work for you. However, I have to say that...

    Best external recorder for microphone?

There are some Tascams slightly cheaper than the Zoom equivalents but, before you spend more money I really think you need to step back and think about your system. The Rode Videomic is designed to mount on a camera--and putting a mic on the camera will never give great results if what you're...

Feedback/ringing sound from ride cymbal? (help please, THANKS)

Post a clip indeed. However my first thought before even reading your post is that Ride cymbals DO have a ringing tone which can be accentuated by microphone position. It might be as simple as move your overhead mics a bit.

Want to add some background vocals to a song?

I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket so I'm no help that way. However, on a few occasions when I've needed similar, I've done some Googling and almost always found some kind of choir club or vocal society. Such people are usually really keen to hear themselves recorded--and if you can't get...
