Recording someone who is on drugs.

I'll usually let them have no more than a beer (or two depending on how long the session is). For a couple guys I've recorded, they actually could play a little better and loosen up if they are super tense which seems to be an automatic reaction when they know that the blinking red light is on...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Thanks Joel! The mic clips are actually just wall mounts for garden tools. They have these great clips on them that say "push", you know for the not-so-quick visitors who might be grabbing one. haha. They are actually quite solid especially if well attach/anchored to your wall (unlike those...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Yep! Spotted it! Nope, haha, just little led color-changing bulbs inside. Nope! Actually if a mix isn't seated properly it will tell you. Similar to listening to your mix on an ipad...yes it always sounds "bad" in comparison to stereo speakers or a big hifi system or car, but the majority of...

    adjusting reverb for only tail

send your track to a verb (and create another send for the other verb). Put the sends in prefader mode and mute the track. Now you're listening to only the reverb. Done.A quick and dirty way to focus on tails without putting the track's sends into prefader mode is to push play on the track (in...

How would you get this drum sound?

Sounds like mostly stereo room mics (in the louder parts) cranked way up, compressed/limited into distortion.

    let me see your studio!

Looks awesome man! Real classy with the wood/stone selections! Remark: that a pretty damn wide distance between your outer monitors and your chair...you must have to roll 5 feet back to get into an isosceles triangle!

    Some recent photos.......

In my new studio, I've chosen to keep the guitars in their cases and out of the room. Since I'm not a dedicated guitarist it's not like I need any of them on hand for immediate use anyways. Less stuff on stands on the floor (and no wall space left for mounting due to acoustic panels/diffusers...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Been a bit since an update!............... Things have been moving a long a little a day at a time and I'm just about done, although i didn't want to take any pics of the full room because I'm so close to adding the finishing touches, I'd rather not share anything more until I am done. BUT...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Filled some voids on ceiling above mix position and on front wall with some extra foam and an extra diffuser I had lying around. Gear gets moved in next! Then I will finish hanging the rest of the 6 remaining clouds as well as the rest of all the wall diffuser panels.

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Funny I literally just did that last night! Haha. As for smell, I made them almost a year ago now at the old house and they sat until i finally found a new house and moved them. They still have a scent, no doubt. But it's not too overpowering at this point lol

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Got the the mix position ceiling clouds up. Two 2" thick OC703 panels. They are attached with eyebolts/anchors in the ceiling and eyebolts in the panels, secured with zip ties. I wanted a wider sweet spot, so I spaced these a little further apart than one would expect. In the middle void where...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Got my wall/ceiling 4" deep bass traps up above mix position. They are attached to the wall via two eye bolts per panel and 2 eye bolts in the ceiling, secured with eyebolts. The bottom of the panel needed no attachment mechanisms, because it rests atop the bass traps below. Perfect. These are...

Hanging Ceiling Clouds as close as possible to the ceiling

Wow, lots of different opinions! As is with ANY acoustics discussion! haha All in all, yes I know the greater the distance, the greater your total % of absoption increases and the lower down the absorber will work, but simply put, it was not an option for my room. The ceiling are 7'2". So with...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

All wall panels up except diffusion panels and 4" panels behind drums All wall panels up except for diffusion panels and 4" oc703 panels behind drums. Mounted my mic stands, cables and headphones for easy access and some extra "random diffusion" near the drums. Also still need to put up my...

Hanging Ceiling Clouds as close as possible to the ceiling

It's funny. Of all the mixes/recording/masters I've ever done, I've never done them with clouds overhead. This dates back to around 2002 when i started getting into ghetto recording for fun with a horribly amateur setup and I've still never done it. I knew they existed (more in recent years) and...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Got the drums set up and hung a few more panels. Still need to put two 4" thick 2x4 panels behind drums and add more diffusers around that area (like the ones in the corners in front of superchunks), and ceiling clouds. I played a quick pass on the drums. Without the clouds or backwall...

Hanging Ceiling Clouds as close as possible to the ceiling

It's funny, I was AT home depot when i viewed your attachments, standing right in front of those things! Oh technology. Yeah, neat idea, but they would have added too much unnecessary height.

Hanging Ceiling Clouds as close as possible to the ceiling

Thanks for the sexy application photo! I was worried those would be flimsy, but alas I guess my panels aren't all too heavy. Just lightweight wood frame with 2" of OC703 and fabric. I did, however, end up going to Home Depot (of course) and grabbed some more medium-sized eye hooks for the...

Hanging Ceiling Clouds as close as possible to the ceiling

I am glad I'm not the only one who thought that was the weirdest f#cking advise in the world! Reminds me of my friend who thinks closed cell foam is useful at absorbing low frequencies and that "gutter stuffers" would act as good bass absorbers in the corner because he did the math and "it's all...
