    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Here's a studio tour video I just shot over the weekend and highly edited due to rambling. Cheers! http://youtu.be/644n6od4i0M

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Thanks! It's definitley larger (almost twice as long) than a 1-car garage but maybe could be considered in the same league? It's about 30-something feet long by by 11 feet wide. I've had a few full bands in there and it's more than enough room to work especially since I don't clutter the room...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Hooked up a little boom box which is away from the mix position and not facing me. It is wired into my monitoring setup, so I have yet another reference point before any audio leaves the studio. With all my other reference points, I never bothered setting it up because i already use other...

My experiment to compare ITB mixing to analog summing.

I like the ruby grapefruits sans sugar, as is! :)

How to use outboard insert gear multiple times in song?

In my mind, recording/mixing is alllll about commitment. People are too scared these days to make a commitment. They record dry, and then they leave CPU intensive plugins active across their whole session for fear of needing to go back and tweak it later in the mix. My theory is, yes, adjust...

    Vocal Booth Treatment

Well the term "first reflection points" would be referring to treating a mixing position where the speakers first reflect with regards to where you are sitting, which you want to trap so those reflections don't arrive at your ears causing ill-judgement. So I guess the term here would just be...

Hey, salt lamps rule man! haha I asked her for them as a bday gift. They are dimmable and they let off negative ions in the air which is awesome for better air, better attitude and overall well-being. Oh and I'll take those over a pink lava lamp any day! :p

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Even though I have a steel door on the place, I still wanted more isolation, so I added a sheet of drywall to the face of the door and adhered it using Green Glue "soundproofing" glue. So in essence I added two more layers to the door. Then i covered it in acoustic foam I had laying around...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

I added some up-lighting from behind/under the mix desk. It adds even more warm gushiness to the vibe of this place when the main lights are off. Super cool vibe going down here now, especially with the addition of floor lamps on either side of the drums with yellow light bulbs. No need for...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

My lovely wife bought me some Himalayan Salt Rock lamps to add to the decor and give it some cool ambiance (when main lights turned off). Aside from cool (warm) looks, they also have a few health benefits I choose to believe as true! Haha!

    Built-in bass traps?

Having the bass trap material behind drywall would make it a membrane which are usually built to absorb one very narrow band of frequencies based on your calculations and what you want to fix, etc. I'm no acoustician but I`ve made some superchunks myself and recenty finished rebuilding my room...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Haha yeah! Actually I have no need for more gobos (see the 4'x4'x6" beasts below). And screw ebay! lol. I'll put em on the Canadian version of craiglist called kijiji: Kijiji: Free Classifieds in Canada. Find a job, buy a car, find a house or apartment, furniture, appliances and more!. And I...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Because you can never have too much bass trapping... I added two 4" thick OC703 bass traps (2'x2.5' each) behind the mix desk in the floor/wall corner. They just sit there so they are easy movable if I need to get back there to fiddle around, but I have a patchbay and a mic snake to avoid all...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

Thanks guys! I just had to report my latest find at a weekend flea market!...a Shure M68 "microphone mixer" circa late 50's-60's for a measly $10. I've heard of these things having a Shure "Level-Loc" (refer to the Soundtoys remake plugin 'Devil Loc') sort of limiting when pushed and can be...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

By the way...the room sounds better than any room I've been in for the purposes I intend to use it for! It just feels perfectly neutral with a natural ambiance that is still bright but not overly reverberant. It's not dead in a way that's it's uncomfortable to the ears to be in there, there is...

    Re-location/build of Diesel Dungeon Studio!

95% Complete! Welp! I guess things have pretty much almost come to a close at DDS as far as construction goes. The last things I have left to do are build two mini bass traps (2.5'x2'x4") with materials I already have, to straddle the wall/floor corner behind desk. During tracking, they will...

How to get "up close" sound recording vocal?

Compression. Usually faster attack/release times but it depends on the song if you still want it to sound natural.

Recording someone who is on drugs.

By the way though dude, Adderall is a medication for people with ADHD. It's to correct the chemical imbalanace in one's brain that causes them not to be able to focus or act too quickly on impulse without thinking. If he is abusing it however (and actually getting high from it), that's a...
