I'm going berzerk trying to figure out where this jumpiness is coming from!!!

I had a wierd problem before - during playback, the tracks became about 1% shorter. Sort of like if a few frames every now and then were missing. When I defragged, it went away. When you're recording, you need to defrag very often. One week ago may very well be enough to cause problems. /Ola

    Too many fans

There are quiet(er) fans and power supplies to buy of the shelf. No magic involved nowadays. If you need it dead silent, look into watercooling and other fun stuff.

    Another weird shaped room

I still think that your control room may be too small. Try th blanket and see how small it feels. it's easy to say that it's large enough when you have the open space behind your back. I like the idea of having a large studio room for jamming and recording but I'm conserned that your design...

    Another weird shaped room

Didn't you just say that you liked open space? That control room will be far too small. Try haning a blanked where the maxwall is in your latest plan. Then furniture the control room temporarily. Finally sit in the control room for 19 consecutive hours. If it feels OK, go for it, otherwise, try...

    Another weird shaped room

I only dare to answer one of the question, as I'm far from an expert on this subject. The space between the walls can be either just air or filled with e.g. rockwool. Regardless of the "filling", the most important thing with the walls (in terms of insulation) is physical separtation, as...

    Another weird shaped room

Building extra walls isn't too expensive, if you do it yourself. It's basically just sooden studs and drywall. Add the cost for hired labour and you'll have to sell a kidney to finish your studio:) If you need to soundproof the entire studio, that's another story. That can cost an infinite...

    Delta 1010 again but...

I'm guessing that Macs use the same approach on stereo/mono files. Perhaps because it makes it easier to make SW for both platforms. Dunno. I didn't folllow you on your last question but I think the answer is "cheese-wiz".

    Delta 1010 again but...

    >Also call me naive here but why if the inputs and outputs are >balanced do they need to be stereo pairs, paning left and right >to audition the signal on each track or channel? I think it's because Windows only handles stereo, be it different channels on left and right or the same for mono...

There are USB soundcards and MIDI interfaces. N-Track would be the best bang for the buck as far as SW goes. There is also some freeware you can che out. Search thi forum and you'll find lots of recommendations. /Ola

    To buy, build or upgrade...

As usual, I will recommend the c-port (aka DSP24 with ADC/DAC2000 brakout box) as a great first studio soundcard. 8 I/O and other bells and whistles. Great value in my opinion. /Ola

    Windows XP

Maybe he doesn't need to record more than 4 tracks at once. As you can have many more in the computer, it might be enough.

The mobo in the "roll your own thunderbird" seems fine. If you want to get away from VIA, check out the TUSL2-C and PIII. All your other parts should cut it. Then there's always the question of soundcards but that's another story.
