Future PC. What it would be ?

Oh, and sending information through wires will probably always be the fastest way. We just don't want radio/microwave transmissions that are powerful and fast enough. May when we start sending our MP3s through worm holes, this will change :) but until then, I'm quite happy with the wires.

!~ My new system for $350. Advice needed!~!!

Just keep in mind that the A7n266-VM is a micro-ATX board, so you'll be needing a micro-ATX case to house it. Very convenient if you ask me but just something you need to have in mind.

!~ My new system for $350. Advice needed!~!!

I've been eyeing that mobo myself, any particular reason for choosing a micro-ATX board? The nForce chipsets have gotten som good reviews but I haven't read anything about compatibility issues with certain soundcards, like some old VIAs had. Maybe you should look at an nForce2 based mobo like...

!~ My new system for $350. Advice needed!~!!

Definetly get 512MB RAM and 80GB HDD. I only have 256MB of RAM in my oresent computer and I'm always just on the limit. As for HDD, for a handful of dollars more, you'll get an 80GB HDD, you'll be happy you did in a couple of months. Athlons get by on far less than 350W as long as you don't...

    Shuttle XPC?

They don't use the same mobos as laptops although they may of course use similar components. I read in the latest review from Tom's Hardware Guide that they're still very noisy. Far more than a regular, decently built, midi tower. That alone renders them useless for me. Too bad though, I really...

    Shuttle XPC?

That's true of course but RAM is pretty cheap and already 768MB should be enough, even if some is used by the video. Any other considerations?

    Shuttle XPC?

Hi, Has anyone here tried one of these Shuttle mini-PCs like e.g. this one? I think they would make a great portable rig as well as a studio DAW, as they are not crippled in the same sense as laptops when it comes to performance and the precense of a PCI slot for your pro(sumer) soundcard...

    Gold-plated connectors vs. standard

third, gold is soft so if it's on connections that you'll plugging in and pulling out often, it'll wear off. Fourth, some fanatics claim that unless you have gold on both connection surfaces, you'll get bi-metallic distorton. I think that last one is a crock of poop but who am I to judge. Gold...

    My next system will be

Re: To anyone with an opinion I've tried 98, 2000 and NT4 and would suggest 2000. Stable, yet compatible, which was kind of what you had to choose between in the days of 98/NT. /O

    My next system will be

I voted before I read that it was a 266. I'd go for 98 or even 98lite. W2k can be done but it uses quite a lot of memory and I assume you don't hava a Gig of RAM in that laptop. I've managed to get W2k installations to use under 40MB of RAM but that machine didn't have networking, firewall...

    Ceiling Question

It'll depend on where the room's insulation (rockwool etc.) is located. If it's all the way up below the roof and the drywall ceeling is just there to cover the trusses and electrical installation, then it should be fine. If the insulation is at the horizontal trussrod just above the ceeling...
