Level dropping slightly on one channel

I just realized that the parts he replaced were the JRC4558 op-amps. I was looking for them on the parts list to get the reference number but did not connect them to your post until now. Not sure what Tascam sent him for parts without opening up my deck. I'll have to ask him, but the audio...

    High/Low Pass Filtering... Errr.. What?

I'll offer my $.02. When I reach for a HP or LP filter, it's usually to help multiple tracks sit together. I tend to need it more when multiple tracks were used on the same source (drums, live band, etc.). For example, I might have a bass cabinet mic'd and DI'd. I might HP one of the...

Level dropping slightly on one channel

Problem has been solved. Here's what happened for future info if someone has the same issue: I had a tech look at it. He replaced some IC's on the rec/repro amp card. It was only a few bucks in parts from Tascam plus his bench time. More than I paid for the deck, but he cleaned it out and...

Hmm, strange problem with new RMG SM468 tapes...

I only bought a couple of rolls of 1/4", but they run fine on my Tascams and Nagra. It is a great tape.

    Scotch 206 and 207 Tape

Great. Thanks for jacking up the Ebay prices on NOS 207. Just kidding. It is great tape though. Keep in mind it's a +3 tape. Works well on my Tascam 22.

Wow and flutter towards end of reel?

I just realized I'm using a 1 mil tape (LPR35). I will try some thicker tape - I have some 468 laying around. If that solves it, maybe a new pinch roller will do the trick. Thanks.

Wow and flutter towards end of reel?

Hey all - I'm experiencing issues with my Nagra IV-S. Sounds great until the last few minutes of a reel, then I hear some speed fluctuation. I'm probably going to just pack it up and send it to Trew Audio or something, but I thought I would check here first. Maybe just a belt or a tension...

Have a Tascam 22-2 and need good tape source

I have a few Tascam 22's. I use LPR35 (you can buy new) and Scotch 207 (have to find NOS or used). Scotch is +3 LPR35 is +6, so there's that. I like to use the 207 at 15 ips or the LPR35 at 7.5. LPR35 at 15 ips if I need to keep noise way down. I find the 207 useless at 7.5. Hope that helps.

    All you pipe organ fans...

My church has a great organ and a very talented music director. You don't get to feel bass like that in your chest very often (that does not come from a subwoofer, anyway). If I were wealthy, I would have one in my home. Along with a nice B3 of course.

    Recording drums with cassette tape!

I like the sound of drums on cassette tape. Take some time and really listen to mic placement. Try a stereo pair of overheads and one on the bass and one on the snare. Move the overheads back enough to get a some natural room reverb. Then add a pinch of snare and bass drum to give them...

    Books - Analogue Vs Digital

Just listen to music recorded before the 1990's. Better still if you can find a record player, but it would have to be in good shape with good-condition records. Regarding books, Bob Katz's "Mastering Audio" has a section on analog vs digital processing with respect to the mastering stage.

Just Got A Tascam 414 MKII, Boy Am I Impressed

I used to wish there was a three-head 4-track. If you recorded onto tape and took the playback from the play head into your PC on the same pass, you could just about eliminate any wow and flutter. Take that out of the equation and cassettes can sound pretty good, assuming 3.75 IPS with NR...

    choosing cassette recorder

The tape speed is a big factor. The 3.75 IPS of a decent four track make a huge difference to me.

How Can Compression Help The Mix?

Better to ask what it is for than to just use it because you think you should. :) Don't look at it like something that will raise the quality of your tracks. You can use it to solve problems, but compression can cause other ones. The dynamic range of any given track is the difference between...

Post Your Outrageous Junkbay Price Listings Here.

On the other hand, I have used Ebay to sell some decent gear for about what I paid (or more). I found an HD24 for $800, used it for a year or two, then sold it for $900. Can't beat that. I've bought and sold a dozen mics the same way. I sleep better at night knowing the thousands I have put...

Youve got to be kidding me.

The volume difference between the A-B samples automatically disqualifies it from any consideration. If they matched peak volume to show the added gain from the "tape compression", that might be acceptable - but then they would need to mention that. Otherwise, it's insulting tricks. I have a...

    Creating more sonic space?

I think MM is giving the key info here. I would add that compression can affect ambience - so be careful. Mixes with good depth were probably recorded in nice-sounding rooms with careful attention paid to the ratio between direct sound and natural reverb going in to the mics into the first...
