Will Analog Multitracks ever be made again?

This may have been mentioned, but IF anyone was to go back into any kind of tooling up to make analog decks, it would probably make more sense to begin by making critical parts for some of the more common, existing machines. If someone started by making heads and such, they could put together...

    Motown Tape Machines?

There's a guy on gearslutz who used to work there, can't remember his handle. Search around, you'll find some threads. I do know they used a lot of Neumann KM86 mics. I have myself a pair, and they are amazing. Creamy creamy creamy.

figure 8 pattern using two cardioids

They will have a null when you flip the phase on one of the cardioids. It will just be wonky to some degree because the diaphragms can't really be back to back. A true fig 8 is always a better choice of course.

You could also use a ribbon mic. The Beyer M130 is my favorite side mic, even more so than the MKH30.

    Analog to Digital (A/D) Converters

I doubt the AD is the quality bottleneck: Sound Card Quality Report The OP's USB mic has the preamp crammed in there too. It's probably a combination of a cheap mic and pre. The converter is the least of those concerns.

    Getting a 1960s sound

I record jazz, and I tend towards making my recordings in a similar style from the 60's as much as I can. The closest I have come is using some older mics (though not from the 60's, mine are from the 70's - Neumann KM86's, RE20, Beyer ribbons, etc) and a Sebatron tube pre. Pan everything hard...

    Comparing reel and vinyl

I am using the brush. I currently have 1.5 grams with the brush, but it sounds great. Listening to some Oscar Peterson right now.

    Comparing reel and vinyl

Thanks. I'm not new to vinyl (I'm in my 40's), but I'm new to doing it right. I think the preamp may be the factor. I have a Shure tracking force gauge, and I just checked and set the force to 1.5 grams. Definitely more top end than the tape, but that could be the aged tape or the preamp as...

    Comparing reel and vinyl

Here's my setup: Technics SL-D5 Stanton 881S (Stereohedron stylus) TCC Audio TC-750LC Preamp (this model: Amazon.com: TCC TC-750LC BLACK Professional Moving Magnet Preamp: Electronics ) I'll do some research on the Stanton and recommended set up. I have a test record too.

    Comparing reel and vinyl

I considered that. My VTF was at 2.0 grams. I bumped it to 2.5 and felt a little more bottom end resulted. Maybe I'll tick it up a notch again and re-listen. Where do you keep yours?

    Comparing reel and vinyl

Finally achieved the first of some listening test I hope to continue with. I located well-kept copies of the same recording, released on both vinyl and open reel (7.5 ips 4-trk). It's called "Persuasive Percussion", and it was intended to be an audiophile recording in its day. It was recorded...

    har-bal any good?

I've had it for a few years. It is useful for learning and problem-solving. Things to keep in mind: The spectrum matching feature is almost useless. The mix, the instrumentation, the key of the song, etc. can all affect the spectrum and you really can't make decisions based on seeing it on a...

Just a heads up to anyone who is looking into the UAD stuff...

Well, a lot of strong opinion on both sides. In a purely objective sense, I can say what I don't like about some of the UAD stuff. Most of the "color" plugs add generous amounts of odd-order harmonics. Engage the Pultec on a 1khz tone and see what happens on an FFT. It sounds very abrasive...

Just a heads up to anyone who is looking into the UAD stuff...

I only have the UAD1 so I can't demo the tape sims yet. I went crazy with them for a while. Through the years, I think my ears improved. The only UAD plugs that I still use are the plate reverb and the precision buss comp. Any of the "color" plugs that emulate transformer characteristics...

Mixing & Mastering a 100% analog session to vinyl

The biggest hurdle IMO, is that we cannot ignore the fact that electronics can degrade with time (caps & such). Parts can be machined, and the discrete components will probably be available for a long time, but the intensive labor can be a challenge. At what point do you say the cost and...

    Question about calibration

It really feels like insufficient bias as opposed to having to demag. Though I can give that a shot. I don't have the experience (or time) to recap the thing. I'm sure it would cost way more than it's worth. Maybe I'll try some other tapes with it. Thanks.

    Question about calibration

Hey folks. I've got a couple of Tascam 22's, and I don't think the factory calibration has ever been messed with. Works perfectly with Maxell UD35. I decided to set one up for LPR35, since it's been getting harder to come by the Maxell. When I began the process, I noticed I was getting the...

    Sony WM-D6C and Mic Issue

I've been so tempted to buy one of these. Does anyone still service them? I'd hate to drop the cash for one and find out it needs some repairs I can't get.
