I made outstanding live recordings on the MT120. Granted, no bouncing tracks or anything - just live to 4 tracks with NR. Under those circumstances, the fidelity certainly does not get in the way of the performance. In fact, the character of the narrow tape + NR sound added useful color...
I normally don't like to send out to tape once it's in the computer, but in the case of hip hop, it would be way easier to produce in the digital world and run a mix out to tape and back for effect. Then you only have to worry about one decent stereo deck.
What city are you in? Perhaps you could get a recomendation for someone that is experienced in this sort of thing and just pay someone to do it?
Even if you have all the right gear, it takes some time to learn to do it right, and you will screw up a few recordings before you get there.
If you...
Point of clarification-
Does the Clasp record to the DAW, then to tape, then to DAW again?
I always thought it hits tape, then DAW. Not the extra AD/DA that you describe.
Valhalla Room. Try some other ones first, just so you realize how stunning it is.
UAD Plate 140 was my go-to reverb, until this came along.
And...it's only $50. A steal for something this good.

I've got a Teac X1000R that I'm going to have refurbished. Looks like a sweet deck with all the features you mentioned, plus noise reduction built in. Looks unused, except that it was not stored well and is really dirty. Belt has rotted and there are some electronic issues. Lights are all...
For recording sax, I've had better luck with dynamic mics like the RE20 (with a good preamp). I often (not always) find condensers too shrill for some things (even really good condensers).
Most players don't mic their bass because it's a PITA compared to a pick up. Mics sound better. The OP asked about mic'ing the bass - he didn't mention pickups. I only brought up pick ups because you guys mentioned them.
Here's Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen using a String Charger. This is a good example of the sound:
EDIT - wrong link - I need to find the right one...
Of course, if you swing hard enough the sound is less important...:listeningmusic:
I used to play double bass for a living. Been through dozens of mics and other gear.
A dynamic mic is usually better than a condenser *except* for the DPA 4099. That is a miniature shotgun and works awesome. I think I paid about $500, but well worth it. Great for recording too.
Another...
The cleverness of burglers amazes me sometimes.
I had a neighbor broken into next door while I was home. I heard a loud glass breaking sound. I looked out and saw the recycling truck picking up the bins. I figured it was all my empty beer bottles going into the truck. Nope. I felt terrible...
Hey folks.
I purchased a Sony WM-D6C just for fun. I have a Nagra IV-S and I don't expect the Sony will compete, but there are times when I'd rather keep the good gear safe at home.
I'm not experienced with plug-in power on the Sony. I do have a pair of stealth-type head-worn mics. They...
Scat singing is the same as an instrumentalist taking a solo. It's not something you'll learn to do well in a short time period.
If you just want to sound good on one or two tunes, I'd just work something out (compose a solo that will sound improvised when you sing it). Start with the...
Ironically, I just opened a new reel of 996 that started squealing.
Rewind, clean the heads, etc. it begins to play fine. Still a PITA.
Has anyone had luck baking 996?
I use a lot of 3M996. It's not sticky per se, but it does shed a lot of oxide. You need to clean the heads frequently. I was setting up a Tascam 22 for some Maxell UD I bought. I forgot I had recently listened to a recording from a roll of 996 on that deck. Put the MRL tape on the 22 and...
