    Another Ampex Analog Recorder...Technically Speaking

I saw one of these for sale once. Can you use it for audio? A 14 track analog field recorder would be nice to have...

$75 fine for operating a studio without a lava lamp.

    Ampex 457

Must be nice. I had a huge stock of it and it all went bad. Not "sticky", but such a pain to use. Shed so much oxide on the heads so fast you could hear the high freq roll off like you were slowly turning the treble knob down.

Do the built-in pre's on a TASCAM 388 have enough 'Va-Va-Voom' to power the SM7b?

Is a 388 preamp close to a Teac 3 preamp? I have a Teac 3 mixer that blew my mind when I plugged in some very old ribbon mics (40's-era Altec birdcage mics). Plenty of gain and good sound. Works with my RE20 as well.

    Quantegy is back

Probably 2 years ago IIRC. May or may not be relevant now, but I would not buy from them directly if they claimed to be selling tape. If there is clear evidence they are manufacturing again, then maybe.

    Quantegy is back

Their online store took my money and never sent me tape. I had to file a Paypal dispute.

Famous Swiss Tape Recorder Brand To Re-introduce Reel-to-Reel Analog Recorder!

No one has mentioned Nagra? They got into the audiophile market with $10,000+ preamps and such. I'll bet it's them.

Channel 1 suddenly won't print. Plays back fine. Any likely culprits?

Whoah ... Never seen one of these before: Tascam Bass Amp Simulator

Is there an easy analog way to just add a touch of comb filtering at fixed frequencies to simulate freq. nulls and such in a room (to make it sound like an amp sitting in a room)? Seems stupid to do that to your signal, but that would be funny if that's how this worked. That plus reverb would...

(More!) TASCAM 388 "Testing! Testing!" ...

Just compare it to the original source. Record a CD or something to tape and flip between the source and tape. Does the signal coming off the tape sound like the original source? It may sound the same, better, or worse. Same or better is good. Worse means you have some work to do on the...

(More!) TASCAM 388 "Testing! Testing!" ...

I used to do that with cassette portastudios and I felt it improved things, but I don't know if you'd hear an audible difference on the 388. You could test the frequency response and see. If properly set up, 7.5 ips is more than adequate for the upper frequencies. The only game-changing...

    quantegy-online purchase

Likewise. Ordered tape. Never shipped. Paypal dispute and got refund. I don't understand how Paypal allows them to continue using their service after so many disputes.

    Getting started

I think it should be mentioned that as time marches on, finding gear that still works well is getting harder. I've purchased about 10-12 different tape machines over the last 5 years, and only 2 did not require immediate service. Even the cassette 4 tracks are going to start having dry belts...

    Marantz PMD 430

Been on the hunt for a good cassette deck for some transfers. Maybe a good portable for some field recording fun too. I have a broken Sony WMD-6C waiting for attention, but I came across a PMD430 cheap. Sounded bad when I got it home, but a quick azimuth adjustment fixed that. Wow/flutter is...
