Gly Johns has done some excellent interviews recently - book, interviews etc. He talks about this issue. If you put the mic near the amp you will not get the tone that an audience is used to hearing, period. Distance impacts tone.

Anyone have experience with IK Mulyimedia's Ampeg SVX Software Suite (Bass Amp Simulator)? I'm curious as to the quality of the amp and cabinet simulations, esp the 1) B-15 and 2) SVT w 8x10 cab. FWIW, I use S1 v2 Pro.

You might want to check out the Sony MDR7502. For phones in that price range, I think they do a good job. They are not at the quality of the 7506s, but I like them a lot esp for the price range you are considering.

I agree that for many genres, even for a college station, you would likely need to get the kick and the snare, along with stereo overheads. So, 4 proper mics at a min. Exceptions might be music that doesn't rely on a kick/snare to be real prominent - some songs in genres like blues, jazz...

A lot depends on the setup of your room and what is driving your speakers, etc. In general, I recommend 8" - based speakers. Many of the 500/pair come down to personal preference. If you can, go listen but be aware that speakers in different settings sound different. Very hard but fun...

Back in my Teac 3440 days (4-track tape) of home demo recording, I found a chorus was the most useful effect for my bass. If I get two votes: chorus and delay. Three votes: chorus and delay and echo.

Sony 7506 is another very traditional studio headphone. I keep a dozen or so different makes/models laying around for various parts of the recording/mixing/mastering process. I use the 7506's in many stages. Great phones esp for under $100.
