Putting the Low End in Mono During Mastering.

I got your email address from your PM and sent you the plug-in. Is Telstra your ISP? Apparently people who use them are not able to get to my web site due to a bug in their DNS or some such. Someone else told me this will fix that for you: Hi Ethan, It turns out the Telstra DNS servers did not...

    warmth

Yes, exactly. Not a huge amount to sound like a fuzz tone, but enough to make the sound thicker. --Ethan

    Golden Ratio acoustic room

There's no perfect ratio, though there are many that are acceptable. The size of the room matters just as much as the ratio. Angled walls don't reduce mode problems, though they do avoid flutter echo and early reflections if the angle is sufficient. But that's a different issue. Much more here...

Putting the Low End in Mono During Mastering.

Excellent. I went to the developer's own site and he pulled all of his plugs. It didn't occur to me to look further. D'oh! :D --Ethan

    warmth

Warmth often means rolling off high frequencies, and adding a slight amount of distortion. --Ethan

Monitor size and room size - does it matter?

Yes, you're correct. Either you use a large speaker and hear the problems in your room, or you use a small speaker which hides the problems even though they still exist. --Ethan

Putting the Low End in Mono During Mastering.

I have another free one called Sanford Bass Tightener that's very good. The developer no longer hosts it on his site, but I'll be glad to send it to you if you email me from my web site: Ethan Winer - Home Page --Ethan

Monitor size and room size - does it matter?

Almost. A larger woofer outputs bass to a lower frequency, but doesn't give more bass overall. Using speakers with small woofers is like sticking your head in the sand. Yeah, you might not hear the problems in your mix at very low frequencies, but they're still there! Further, most room acoustic...

    Recording a Barbershop Quartet

More important than any of that is the room you record in. How big a room do you have? If it's small, put the singers in the middle away from walls, and keep the microphones fairly close. In a large room you can put the microphones farther away, which is usually better. This matters more than...

The Best Time to Process Guitar?

Exactly. I think severe EQ or compression is best avoided during tracking, if only because it's difficult to reverse later if you find it's not right. However, EQ can be reversed exactly, as long as you note the precise settings. --Ethan

Audio device - what to get ?

Yes, which is exactly why he needs to replace his Delta 1010. There are newer slot types, but those too may be replaced with something else in a few years. As for USB latency, I set my Focusrite 8i6 for 10 milliseconds, but it goes as low as 1 ms. Even 10 ms is plenty fast enough to play...

The Best Time to Process Guitar?

I agree with Miroslav. It really helps to play your best when you can hear the guitar as you want it to sound. However, for most things I prefer to wait until mixing when you can hear everything in context. So I never EQ or compress bass or keyboards while recording. --Ethan

Audio device - what to get ?

Definitely get USB, not Firewire. I too had to replace a Delta sound card when I got my current computer, and I bought a Focusrite 8i6 for $250 which has been excellent. They have other models for that cost more or less, depending on how many inputs you need. --Ethan

    preamp question

This highlights the problem with audio magazines and a lot of audio forum advice. Replacing one perfectly good preamp with another preamp is just a waste of money. As others told you, microphones and room acoustics affect the quality of your productions far more than what preamp you have...

    Newbie question about subwoofers

You already got good answers, and I can add a bit more. All room acoustic problems are caused by reflections from the walls, floor, and ceiling. These reflections create echoes, reverb and ambience, peaks and nulls, comb filtering (a form of peaks and nulls), and a form of reverb known as...

How to best treat my room for room modes?

The solution is bass traps. More here: Acoustic Basics --Ethan

Putting the Low End in Mono During Mastering.

Phase is not the problem, and "mono-izing" low frequencies is a good idea. This plug-in does exactly that and it's free (though for only a short time I believe): Mono Bass | Boz Digital Labs --Ethan

    Newbie question about subwoofers

Those speakers go low enough to not really need a subwoofer. If your aim is to have a better bass response in your room, you'll get much more benefit by adding bass traps instead of a sub. --Ethan

Asus Xonar D2X: how can I record at 192Khz and 16 or 24 bits ?

Either he recorded incorrectly, or he compared improperly. 44/16 is audibly transparent, and audibly (and measurably) superior to any analog tape or phonograph record. The metrics for fidelity are frequency response, noise, distortion, and time-based errors (wow, flutter, jitter). Comparing...

Asus Xonar D2X: how can I record at 192Khz and 16 or 24 bits ?

I don't know much about available shareware, but I can tell you that recording at 192 KHz is a waste of hard drive space. The best analog tape is equal to about 12 or 13 bits, so recording at more than 16 bits is equally wasteful. Any competent sound card can capture everything on your tapes...
