    Speaker positioning

That equilateral triangle is very much an internet invention. It all depends on your speakers and your room. Some speakers come in a left/right config. Others are a bit more "omni". Some want to be closer together, others need a bit more space between them. Moving them just 10 cm can make a big...

    Speaker positioning

There's two ways to approach this problem: - With good ears and lots of time, start moving things till the sound pleases you. Especially the speakers, as you will have more bass on the left. - Buy a measurement mic (60$). Download REW (free) and start measuring your room. You'll invest a lot...

How To Find Electrician in My Area That Is Qualified / Experienced With Studio's?

It sounds as if you have RFI, because of a ground fault somewhere. A sound sample would clear up most doubt. A good electrician should be able to check grounding, Even without considering your interference problem. It could be due to something simple. What I encounter often, over here, is a...

Musician's Friends & Accuracy of Ads - MXL V250 Deal of the Day

There's only one pencil mic that qualifies as an LDC, IIRC. And I don't even remember the brand. I take 25 mm as the line too. But I've had comments that 20 mm is an LDC too. Personally, I think it has a lot to do with the housing. Pencil mics are SDC's to most people. Anything that isn't a...

Musician's Friends & Accuracy of Ads - MXL V250 Deal of the Day

From what diameter does a mic go from SDC to LDC? Or from SDC to medium and from medium to LDC?

    New and renew equipment doubt

USB audio compliance is always nice. It rules out manufacturers deciding not to make new drivers.

    New and renew equipment doubt

My most recent Mac is from 2009. I see no reason to buy newer, as it is not essentially faster. And I work on newer ones at work. These just seem buggier. My oldest one in daily use is around 12 years old. It's a G5 PPC and it runs Reaper 5, with an TME FF400. It easily records 18 channels...

    New and renew equipment doubt

USB3 specs are a mess, especially for audio. One example is USB1.1 UAC audio interfaces. Most, if not all, work with USB2 ports. Only a few work with USB3 ports. Maybe that's also the reason why Microsoft decided not to include USB3 UAC drivers in Win10?

    New and renew equipment doubt

Welcom, Jorsai. Most audio interfaces will be compatible with an iMac Pro and Sierra. What's keeping a lot of manufacturers from responding to your mail, is probably the iMac Pro. They don't have one to test with and they are cautious cause it is the only machine from Apple that runs a custom...

How To Find Electrician in My Area That Is Qualified / Experienced With Studio's?

We have coupled fuses on these systems. If one side trips, the other side is disconnected too. Besides, there's always the differential safety (GFCA?). That's theory, of course. It should be like that in new systems. In old ones, all bets are off. And if people start DIY'ing too.

How To Find Electrician in My Area That Is Qualified / Experienced With Studio's?

What's Shark Tank? TV show? He's been the head of engineering for Peavey, most of his professional life. He and his company got sued by the family of a guitar player who died because of a wall socket that had live connected to ground. None of the 3$ tools will "see" that as a fault, while it's...

Highpitched whining noise; how to get rid of it?

A sign that you're dealing with RFI, at 1 GHz or higher.. It could also carry DVB-T transmitters. These can easily cause nearby RFI, mixing with the 4G frequencies. That can be tuned out by the operator, if you can get them to act. Yes, of course. We still use the old names :D Have a look...

Highpitched whining noise; how to get rid of it?

If the mlc is the cause of picking up RFI, it could be solved with a pair of 10 to 47 pF capacitors from pin 1 to pins 2 and 3, as close as possible to the XLR pins inside the mic. But these should already be present. Have you tried different cables? I'm guessing one of your nearby neighbours...

    Time for a new mic?

Since these are new, there's nothing to replace. I just compared them to the ones I have, in case. And it's about outside measures; the XLR plug part fits well enough.

    Time for a new mic?

It's 3 pin, but the ring holding it in place is spaced differently from what I use normally. So the ones I have don't fit well. Also, I'd need to drill another hole for the screw that holds it in place.

Highpitched whining noise; how to get rid of it?

Do you live near a cell phone tower? It's certainly not your typical USB whine. Sounds more like RFI from a digital source. Does it also happen when the laptop is running on battery?

    Time for a new mic?

I didn't say you wasted your money. Just that both the interface he has and the mic he has are equally useable. But the opinions here paint another picture. I can't predict which mic will work with his voice. I can, however, predict how a preamp or interface will work with a certain mic. Not...

    Late arriving Musicians

Newest one: short movie. No script, no rider, no date, no budget, no power... It's a half day location gig. They hadn't even considered they might need power. Camera's run on batteries, don't they? Of course, my rig can run on batteries. But these are heavy, so I don't usually take them with...

How To Find Electrician in My Area That Is Qualified / Experienced With Studio's?

They don't tell the whole story and are potentially dangerous, in rare cases. Here's a design that doesn't have that fault: OD1 Unfortunately, it would cost 15$ to produce in mass and that makes it unprofitable, so we'll never be able to buy it. That's why John Roberts decided to release the...
