    Studer 928 Story...

I'm sorry, man. sounds like you'd like to go into politics. When I advised someone to measure his recording room before treatment, as he was on a budget, I was told by some big mouth it wasn't appropriate for this forum, because it's about home recording... Now you turn it another way. OK by...

On a tight budget, need a good mic for vocals + acoustic guitar

Maybe have a look around for a Tascam TM80. It's an iSK800 (Ningbo Shengke Electronic Co) and you can find it for around 45 US$ on Amzon. It doesn't sell well, so it's being discounted as we speak. It's one of the better Chinese LDC's, just like the MXL's you mention, but even cheaper.

    Right to Repair

Denmark already has something in place. Equipment that has low repairability, requires higher VAT. There's a thing being prepared by the EU, but I don't know the details. And in the USA, the "right to repair" movement is being carried by people like Louis Rossman, who runs a company that not...

Moving sound vertically in the stereo field

I came across that too. Fake. It's just a bunch of people who like to automate the pan button and think that's cool. Sometimes it's even cool. Most of the times, it's plain annoying...

Moving sound vertically in the stereo field

Michael Gerzon? He's the father of ambisonics. This started in the 60's at the BBC, so it's certainly not a recent thing. Kind of a spinoff of the research the BBC was doing with stereo. Due to the digital explosion, however, it has become practical lately. See: Higher Order Ambisonics On the...

    Neumann TLM 103

I have a friend or two that do VO work professionally. They both own a boatload of mics. They mostly use just a couple. Mic choice is very dependent on the voice in question. One of them swears by Sennheiser MKH mics, fi. But that's only because they happen to suit his voice. The other one...

    Studer 928 Story...

There's a mirror of the ftp site here: Index of /studer/Public/Products/Mixing_Analog/928 Index of /studer/Public/Products/Mixing_Analog/928/Technical_Info Index of /studer/Public/Products/Mixing_Analog/928/Technical_Info/Options Probably nothing you haven't found already...

    Studer 928 Story...

Even when you include professional studio's, there's not much around that comes close to the Studer's build quality. Not even with bigger consoles like Harrisson. And these aren't exactly for home recording, as they are pretty much built to order. Anyhow, it was just a reflection, because I was...

What do you find missing in the NT1?

On a tight budget, need a good mic for vocals + acoustic guitar

Get that XM-8500. Better than an SM58, but less solid. The Neewer is a bit hit and miss. The first ones were true LDC's from iSK, but the later ones were electrets. Very good housings for thos who want to build mics, but what's inside often lacks quality control. The first ones were so good I...

    Studer 928 Story...

Educate me. What's still out there that might end up in a home studio and is of decent build quality?

    Studer 928 Story...

It’s not analog. It’s build quality and clean sound. Sure, there still are new analog consoles around. But nothing like a Studer...

    Studer 928 Story...

Just the older big ones are different beasts. I think Sweetbeats' Studer was one of the last dinosaurs. Completely analog, very customisable and with lots of routing options. Mitec was the last manufacturer of that kind. You could get direct outs on every channel if you wanted, fi. Loved by...

    Studer 928 Story...

I’ve owned quite a few desks from broadcast sources. They seem to have Some mythical properties for Some believers. Usually, there’s not much difference from the non-broadcast verslons. And a Studer is very configurable...

    Studer 928 Story...

That about sums it up. You make me real jealous :D Finding a desk like this at a reasonable price is remarkable. Even here in Europe, where you still can find some from broadcast, these are snatched up by traders immediately. In fact, I've given up hope of ever finding one. Unfortunately all...

Pre Amp Behavior? Is this correct?

That makes two of us, Dave.

Pre Amp Behavior? Is this correct?

That seems way too hot. I mean, it's a topped out line signal into a mic preamp... Or am I not reading that right?

    Microphone for recording

Of course not. It's the Nessie. I suppose they are referring to Loch Ness? :D It's one of these newfangled USB mics with a DSP. Promises auto everything, except auto-tune. I'm sure there's a market for that one too, but not enough room in a typical mic, xause it requires more horse-power from...

Been given a Neumann TLM 170 - is it really necessary?

Now I'm curious. What are "newky browns"? To the OP: Use your ears. Record with both mics, compare. Take your time. And have some newky browns :D
