Looking for help on my mix - too claustrophobic and muddy

We're recording in an untreated room and a tight budget, so the vocals were tracked with an SM57 in my living room. I think we could get a better sound if we recorded with less gain (can hear awful sounding reflections on this one). Thanks for the tips. I think you're right, the sub-bass...

Looking for help on my mix - too claustrophobic and muddy

Thanks for the advice. I was going for as much intimacy as I could, which is why the vocals are completely dry. I'll experiment with some small room verb and see what it sounds like. Thanks Robus - I think I agree with you there, the guitar does seem a bit too loud at the start. Are you saying...

    Skyline - Looking for feedback

Sounding good. Personally I think the electric guitars could do with more mids, but I guess you're going for a metal-y sound. They sound to me like they might be blending into the background a little too much.

Looking for help on my mix - too claustrophobic and muddy

Hmm just tried do EQ it with no avail... found it around the 2-3KHz range but ducking it a little bit didn't seem to help. I think we will probably just have to re-record the guitar with a different mic placement.

Thanks. Nice avatar - haven't listened to that album in years!

Looking for help on my mix - too claustrophobic and muddy

I think it was mainly due to the mic position and the way that I've EQ-ed it. The mic was pointing at the fretboard... Thanks for the plugin, I'll check it out!

Looking for help on my mix - too claustrophobic and muddy

Thanks - this was actually recorded in my living room using a single SM57 haha. I boosted around 2000KHz on the guitar to try to make it more "sparkley" but I'm not sure it worked - I'm not sure what else I can do to balance out the frequency space on the higher end.

Looking for help on my mix - too claustrophobic and muddy

Overall I'm actually quite happy with it, but the track still sounds like it might lack "sparkle".

Looking for help on my mix - too claustrophobic and muddy

Hi guys, This song is faaar from finished, but I've been trying to get a rough initial mix together. I don't know how to make it sound more airy and spacious. Note: the vocals are going to be re-recorded. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Need help mixing an alternative "math rock" song

Thanks a lot. Well it's only a demo so it's not something that needs to sound "good" per se. I'm just trying to work towards something that sounds a bit less crap... How would I go about bringing more "definition" to the bass? Essentially, any tips on EQ-ing the tracks in order to provide a...

    What am I doing wrong?!

Remember, in order to generate a "powerful" entrance with the chorus, the verse has to be audibly quieter. So essentially the volume of everything should increase when it "kicks in".

Need help mixing an alternative "math rock" song

I feel as though there should be some EQ-ing to do... but I'm not sure what :/

Whos is your favorite current Producer?

I have to say I am a big fan of Chris Sheldon. He's produced a lot of my favourite albums e.g. Vertigo of Bliss by Biffy Clyro, Frames by Oceansize, Very Fast Very Dangerous by Reuben. Oh Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree sure has a good ear.

    What am I doing wrong?!

In the chorus, a slightly overdriven guitar comes in. Well, technically two, one panned to each side. Is that what you're missing?

Need help mixing an alternative "math rock" song

Hi everyone, I'm the singer/guitarist of a new alternative mathy rock band from Bristol, UK. We've been doing some "bedroom" recordings for demos. I've been working on the mix for this new demo... I was wondering how I could improve it. Bare in mind that I cannot change the intrinsic drum mix...
