    Another phantom power ??

Many valve (vacuum tube in the American language) microphone power supplies will have blocking capacitors on the input so that the phantom power will not get through to cause any damage. But best to check with the mic. manufacturer first.

Is there a multitrack recording mixer?

Yes - the AETA 4MinX is a mixer/recorder. :thumbs up: There are 10 input channels which can be mixed in any way you want to up to 8 tracks. Sound Devices also make mixer/recorders, as do Sonosax and the Aaton Cantar.

    Headphones for tracking

I find the opposite. I find a coiled cable is heavy and acts like a spring - it really increases the weight of the headphones and does not allow much movement before it pulls on the headphones and pulls you back like a spring - I find a coiled cable horrible. A 3m straight cable allows plenty...

Mid-side and Blumlein, Condensers or Ribbons?

I have done a lot of MS recording. My first choice is a fully symmetrical single diaphragm condenser mic. - IE: Sennheiser MKH 30. My own MS rigs are the MKH 40/30 combination. If you have a low budget - the Ambient ATE 208 EMESSER is also a single diaphragm fig-8 and would be my second...

help finding pair of mics for stereo home recording - acoustic instruments

The Røde NT 5 or NT 55 are a good inexpensive stereo pair, as is also the Sontronics STC-1 (the STC-1 is a cardioid mic. but have optional interchangeable omni and hyper-cardioid heads available). :thumbs up:

    PC won't pick up Microphone

Open up the software and check the mic settings. You may have the plug-in power switched off. Or - the sound card is not correctly selected on your DAW program.

A good mic for or under $20

You should have read the instructions first as you don't put the mic. into the shockmount properly. You have to squeeze the two extended finger-pads together to open up the grip, so you can insert the mic. easily without scratching it. The capsule looks like a cheap electret and the microphone...

M/S Technique - Simulating a Bidirectional Mic w/Two Cardioid Mics

You are missing the point completely here, I'm afraid. The OP's question was specifically about MS and using two cardioids facing in opposite directions to approximate a fig-8. MS, when matrixed, give the equivalent of an XY array. MS with a cardioid mid equates to a pair of hyper-cardioids...

    Cardioid ignorance

Actually, according to the polar-pattern you posted, maximum sound rejection is at about 120˚ rather than at the rear.

M/S Technique - Simulating a Bidirectional Mic w/Two Cardioid Mics

You are over-thinking again. If you are making a fig-8 by using two cardioid mics - the one pointing left should be normal and the one pointing right needs to be polarity reversed - otherwise you won't get a fig-8. It will have a funny response at high freqencies due to the physocal separation...

    Cardioid ignorance

This is a wierd polar-patten. Wide-cardioid at 500Hz - strange and non-symmetrical at 125Hz - cardioid, bordering on super-cardioid at other frequencies - then getting real hyper-cardioid at 8kHz and almost lile a gun mic. at 16kHz. Be very careful with the rear as you will have out-of-phase...

    20 quid LDC

Of course - plug-in power only works with an unbalanced mic. and is done via a 3.5mm jack plug. A phantom powered mic. would not work at all from plug-in power.

Mic without proximity effect for vocals?

And sound very different. The SM58 has a tailored response to help the vocal cut through a backing band. The Sennheiser mics with this cut-through reponse are the e840, e935 and e945.

    Cardioid ignorance

This is the front:- The front of the cardioid pattern points here:- This is what a cardioid pattern looks like:- I hope this helps.

    20 quid LDC

From the picture I saw (and attached) it looks like a small capsule in a large housing. And if it works with plug-in power from a laptop it must be unbalanced.

Mic without proximity effect for vocals?

For a mic. without proximity effect - use an omni, they don't have any proximity effect. The cardioid AKG D202, D222 and D224 had virtually no proximity effect - they had a separate capsule for the bass and rear entry slots and the bass capsule was so far away from the source there was almost...

    20 quid LDC

The Sontronics looks like a proper LDC capsule. The cheapo looks like a small capsule in a larger housing. It looks as if the diaphragm is hidden behind a plate with holes in and could be a cheapo electret capsule, but could also be a dynamic as the pic.is not clear.

Question - Shapeways microphone clip (Neumann 184 microphones)

    Use a microphone clip - that's what I do.

    20 quid LDC

Is it a condenser mic. or a dynamic? They say it's a condenser and then say "Neodymium magnet for high signal-to-noise ratio" - and you dont have a magnet in a condenser mic. Personally I would run screaming from something that even the seller knows nothing about. Oh, and I'm not sure it's an...

What is the best microphone to use for low brass?

That's why I originally suggested an omni. Listen (with your ears) to where the instrument sounds best, and put the mic. there. I always bear in mind where the audience is sitting when the instrument is played - they only hear the high frequencies by reflection from the ceiling - so if you...
