Would you do analog recording ?

I actually agree with a lot of what you are saying. But digital recording *is* far more accurate than analogue tape recording - yes, I agree that digital has problems of it's own, but these are far less of a distortion on the recording than those of analogue tape. Please note - I am NOT pro...

Would you do analog recording ?

No - the drive to digital came well before this. Denon were recording digitally back in 1973. The drive to digital was driven by higher quality and accuracy. Editing was not easy at the start and was awkward and expensive - easy editing only came later. Early stereo editing was all based...

Would you do analog recording ?

I have not said that digital will sound "better" - but that it is more accurate to the original. If you want the colour that analogue distortion adds, then go for it, I don't have any problem with that at all. Many people seem to be blind to all the distortions that analogue tape recording has...

    what should I get??

Ah - OK - thanks, I missed that. In which case the D5 are about $100 cheaper and the D8 not that much more. So I would *definitely* go for the D5 or D8, then. :thumbs up: Oh - and driver size is not everything - my 5" Geithain RL906 go lower than the 8" D8 (but that is part of what I paid...

    what should I get??

Firstly - what is your budget? It looks as if your budget is quite low - so I would look closely at the Equator D5 - or the D8 if you can afford the extra. The D5 have a 5" driver and the D8 have an 8" driver. These are co-axial monitors that give an excellent stereo image and depth - they...

Would you do analog recording ?

Agreed - I was recording pure analogue for about 10 years before I went digital back in 1983. So I am very well acquainted with analogue tape and all its foibles - I am well used to cutting and splicing tape to a high standard for broadcast. But I found that analogue was just not good enough...

Would you do analog recording ?

No - where on earth did you get that from? You can "mess around" in both analogue and digital to your heart's content. But a pure digital recording has less non-liniarities and less distortion than a pure analogue tape recording - that's simple physics. I'm not against analogue at all, if...

Would you do analog recording ?

It was altruistica that re-launched this thread - I was just answering someone who posted after him.

Would you do analog recording ?

You can measure wow and flutter, modulation noise, and all the other non-liniarities that are added by a tape recorder, for example. Why do you think recording engineers went digital in the 1980s? It was to eliminate all the distortion and non-liniarities caused by analogue recording. It's...

Would you do analog recording ?

Very possibly... Loud and bright is not a characteristic of digital recording - it is more to do with the choice of microphones, how you position them and what you do with the sound file in the DAW. The "loudness wars" have certainly destroyed the music and, yes, I would agree that adding...

I think it's out now - I saw it at the MPX show in London a week ago. :thumbs up:

LOL - if they interviewed 100 engineers they would get 100 different answers (maybe more) :D

    Grand Piano Recording

The best mic positions are likely to be different depending on the piano, the room, the pianist and the music being played. My go-to mics for grand piano are pairs of:- Gefell M221, Sennheiser MKH 20 or 8020, Neumann KM133-D. My start position is normally 20cm spaced pair around 2m from the...

Could this pair of microphones work fine for a good stereo recording?

No - you need two microphones the same if you are doing stereo (MS excepted). You could multi-track the drum kit, recording one or two drums at a time and then mix to "stereo", but I would not do it this way.

    Please "identify" this Neumann mic.

Sorry, you are wrong here. The TLM 103 uses a K103 capsule (I double-checked this on the Neumann spare parts list) - though I think the first ones had a K87 capsule. The TLM 103 has a centre-terminated capsule, the K89 (as used in the U89, TLM 170 and TLM 193) is edge-terminated.

Monitors make that big of a difference

This is because a monitoring system is the loudspeakers AND the room. A professional studio will have an acoustics consultant come in and match the monitors and the room. And - yes - a monitor should be ruthlessly accurate and only sound good when the recording is good.

    Lesser Known Brands

At the inexpensive end - Line Audio make some amazing microphones at stupidly low prices that punch well above their weight. At the top end, Microtech Gefell (the company started by Georg Neumann in 1928) - equal to (if not better than) Neumann, DPA and Schoeps, but far less well known.
