    Tascam 238 repair

Just out of curiosity, would this repair also fix problems with erratic motor speeds? My 238 records and plays but the speed is varies making the recording useless.

While recording recorder randomly clicks off

I know this thread is dead but in case anyone sees this and has this problem.... If it is stopping randomly and resetting the counter to 0 then you'll need to check your tape sensors. There are two little push levers in the top left corner above where the cassette sits. You can use electrical...

    Tascam M-308 setup question

Okay... So, I am using a mixture of a Tascam M308, a fostex R8, a MOTU Ultrlite, and a Sony TC-850. Here is how I am planning to set it up. 8-D outs from the M-308 using a TRS to RCA snake to the R8 inputs. 8-R8 RCA outputs to the M-308s TRS Line inputs using another snake. 8-pgm outputs...

I need an opinion on which setup to use...

Thanks Beck! That is definitely good info. I think we'll track into the R8 because it is literally "like new". An interesting side note about this project is that we are consciously trying to get a "crappier/richer" sound. Our last studio album sounded good but it was a little too good. There is...

I need an opinion on which setup to use...

I have a Tascam 388 in good shape. I also have two Tascam 238 cassette decks and M-308s as the mixers. Last, I have a Fostex R8 with a 454 matching mixer (or I could use the M-308 into it). Here is the dilemma (question). Is there really going to be a huge difference between recording to the...

Questions about running a Tascam 308 mixer to a 238 syncaset.

Okay, so I have a 308 that I just got in perfect shape that I am going to run into a Fostex R8 and a Tascam 238. First off, has anyone done the 308 into a 238 and had good results. They are both great pieces of equipment, so, I am excited to see how it sounds. Second I have the 238 with dbx...

    Sennheiser MD421 types

Thanks. Yeah, the only picture I have to go off of is a picture from guitar center's used site. It didn't show much so I called and it was an MKII. Not really the one I'm looking for but it was 139$ so I bought it.

Whats a great DAW software for recording?

I used Protools and switched to Logic. It is just much quicker in the home studio environment. As far as qualities, each have their own positives and negatives but I find Logic faster when I mix and edit tracks. So, it won out on that level.

    Sennheiser MD421 types

Is there a good way to tell from a picture which version of the MD421 you're looking at MKI, MKII, original, etc... I know this one is not vintage because the mount is plastic. Thanks, Ryan

I might do that once I get it checked out depending on the results. Thanks for the offer.

How many folks record to tape and bounce to digital?

Thanks. That is exactly the process I am looking to do. Though, I might add additional tracks via the daw because I can't get by with just 8 and from what I've read it is pretty hard to get the machine to play at the exact same speed.

How many folks record to tape and bounce to digital?

Oh, and I should mention that I've done this a lot with two track reel to reel for mastering but never with the 8 tracks and dumping directly for the purpose of mixing/processing in the digital world. So, I'm interested in how tracks handle being recorded in analog but mixed digitally.

How many folks record to tape and bounce to digital?

I now have two 1/4inch 8 track reel to reel recorders and a really nice Mac tower with a 24 track MOTU interface. I've been considering setting up a chain where I record to the tape and monitor that into the digital interface. Does anyone else do that? Does that seem reasonable or am I going to...

    Tascam 388

Hey tape pros, I just got a Tascam 388 to add another 8 tracks of tape to the Fostex R8/454 that I have. Problem is the stop button on the 388 works about once in every 5 to 6 pushes. Any idea if this is a hard thing to try to fix myself. Do the contact points on these get dirty and stop...

    Should I get an RE20 or a MD421U?

Really? I actually just got it and planned to sell it and keep the c1000s but I have been happy with it on my acoustic guitar when I run it through my dbx 286a. It has a nice full tone and really picks up a lot of detail. I could see how it would be overly harsh for a lot of applications though...

    Recording Drums

For me, the most critical mics are the overheads (I use three sets but you only need one if done properly). Then the snare is next important. Last, the kick. You can get a good recording without even using tom drum mics, so, naturally they should be last on your shopping list. For overheads...

    Micing a violin

Agreed. With an instrument like violin, where you record is almost as important as how you record it. If you can find a room with a high ceiling it will sound much better. One thing I like to do with stuff like this is to have a close mic and a room mic and then blend the two into a mono track...
