DDA Q series vs. Soundcraft Vienna II

Cool! There are models that are aimed squarely at multitrack recording (24buss), Im sorry but I dont remember the series letter. ...But, the crazy flexibility in routing, auxs, matrixi, sends et al makes it quite easy to use one that wasnt specifically done for multitracking in a studio.

DDA Q series vs. Soundcraft Vienna II

Great to hear! I'd put mine up against any board for sonics, low noise, sound of the EQ or any other parameter. The build quality of the boards if absolutely first rate. The whole console is a tank for that matter.

For the analog fanatic who has everything...

Thats a great idea! I have a Mackie 24 channel extension board I havent been able to get rid of. I think this is where it may go to retire. It will be a nice piece to go with the bass drum coffee table I already have!

    TASCAM M3500....just picked one up!

It was the way it was back then. If it was professional gear it was generally in a professional environment. Back then the filthy habit of smoking cigarettes (in the presence of non-smokers) was acceptable. That equipment in that environment equals serious gunk over the years.

    M520 aquisition... Crazy??

Nice job, makes the whole package look great! Your work has me toying with replacing the sides and adding a top shelf to my DDA out of some beautifully grained wood.

    Tascam 58 or Otari MX-5050-8?

Ive had 5050s and a 38 or two. I know, the 38 isnt the same but its genetics are pretty similar. 38 hands down for me (and I still own pristine example even though dont use it). Neither would be mistaken for a pro machine, more pro-sumer. I dont like the tape path on the Otari or the goofy...

    Tape Deck

Good! You should be OK. Its the same thing, just in a tighter space. A completely dead machine is often a blessing, as its often simple and localized. Seriously as simple as a fuse of something easy many times.

"All backcoated Ampex..." Hm, News to me. Guess I better get busy pitching that storage room full of 499 then?

    Tape Deck

Its got a silver face :thumbs up: If it floats your boat, go for it. It is a consumer deck. It is not Nachamichi's best effort. But 75 bucks and it does what you want it to then go for it!

Be a little patient. I've never paid more than 50 bucks for them before.

Look no further than Tascams, such aS THE 122MKIII. These are professional grade cassette machines and quite affordable. Still some parts available, manuals are great. Just cant help you with the silver face.

    Only on disc capacitors.

    TASCAM M3500....just picked one up!

The power supply should be tested under load, i.e. connected and console on. Do you have a scope? This is the fastest tool for me to trouble shoot gear with. Checking for ripple on the P/S leads will tell you whether or not you need to look at the big caps in the P/S. Do you have a manual? If...

    TASCAM M3500....just picked one up!

I dont know the workings very well of Tascam desks. But Ive run into problems with other desks that were in a smoking environment for years, Namely, if the console was wired in its previous location with cables plugged into the the sends and returns to go to say a patch bay...then you try to use...

When will this Portastudio bubble burst?

It just depends where you search. I walked through a thrift store at lunch the other day in Glendale, there was either a 414 or 424 sitting there. Yeah it was missing a couple knobs, but looked sound enough. Pice? $9.95, so there you go.

    4 track cassettes to Reels?

^^^ Thats it in a nut shell. Ditch the two cassette machine approach, period. I wouldnt look at an 8 track cassette machine either, novel, but ehhh. Find a table top 8 track reel to reel, there are several makes and model to choose from. If you really want to master to tape, you will need a...

My Tascam 38 reel to reel is not recording.

Post this again, in the Analog forum. The people there know tape machines.

For fudge sake, how do I get this snare sound?!

Ludwick Supra-phonic, add a little reverb.

    Levels to tape

I stick to the book and use MRL guidelines if I dont have the exact cat# tape. The Sonys store 6 calibration setups in addition to auto-calibrate. Sometimes, I just press the buttons and listen for what I like, LOL. I recently added Dolby Spectral Recording to the studio racks (got it free at...
