A ton of Analog stuff coming up!!

Ill see what is with the S/R. I know its a full rack with all 24 cards and a power supply. I dont remember any cabling. Sorry I am away from this so much. Trying to liquidate a lifetime's worth of "stuff". The studio part is just a small part. There are drums and Military vehicles, and large...

A ton of Analog stuff coming up!!

Sorry about the delay, been very busy with work. Sweetbeats, I will dig out the manual next week when I get back home. Yes 10 hours or less. I bought it from a studio in Hollywood 12 years ago. They had bought it new but never commissioned it. Guess they wanted to make the jump into Digital...

A ton of Analog stuff coming up!!

I am at a stage in my life when it is time to downside. I started in 2011 to build a home analog studio, I had it running in various incarnations, But Im ready to let it go. I will start posting pictures as I can. Mainly gauging if there is even interest as this forum seems to have slowed down a...

    Liquidating my never finished studio

haha! That shows how disconnected from this I have become. Yes, of course, Otari. Thanks for keeping it real!

    Liquidating my never finished studio

Thanks. Start with tape machines I guess. 2 Sony APR-24 2" 24 track decks. Both with auto locator/remotes. Good running stored in the heated studio since I bought them. Each comes with a 14" take up reel. Some spares including manual, boards and a new complete head stack. 1 Otari MTR-10 4...

    Liquidating my never finished studio

Been a long while guys. Life overcame dreams and now Im going to sell off most all of my analog studio stuff. Should I list here or down in the for sale forum? Not sure how many analoggers go there. I have several 2" machines, a couple of 1/4" mastering machine, big DDA console and tons of...

Why does a glazed or hardened pinch roller cause trouble??

Interesting. Both types of large format machines I have have the pinch roller on the oxide side. Imagine if the pinch roller was the same hardness as the capstan. Im pretty sure the performance wouldn't be, uh, great. My understanding is that the pinch roller needs to be soft enough to A) get...

NOS Ampex 2 inch tape. Thrift store find.

Sticky. 456 with the label in the middle of the box, as opposed to at the bottom is just about all sticky. But for 20 bucks you got nice reel!

I need a new O-Scope; what are you guys using for troubleshooting?

I have my trusty old school Tek scope and also an HP1980B. They were built for a lifetime of use. No issues to date although I rat-holed away spares for both including new CRTs when I saw them for great prices. For voltmeter HP3400A true RMS voltmeter, probably still the gold standard if you...

    POwer testing in old house

A couple more "fun" things to know. Early tube equipment: radios and guitar amps often had the chassis wired to one of the two plug prongs. The other fed the power transformer primary and it returned to chassis and back to the outlet. To confound an already stupid idea, the plug was not...

    POwer testing in old house

You do not list your location. In the U.S. older homes have only two prong electrical outlets (no earth ground). More modern homes have three prongs that includes the earth ground. I wouldn't set up a studio on the older no ground system.

    The ultimate in analog

Be damn careful with those things. Notice they don't have a polarized mains plug with no ground (at least in the US). One side of the line is chassis ground. if you have the plug in one way the "line" of your mains is on the chassis. If you happen to touch the chassis while working on it as well...

    good 80's/90's analog consoles/mixers.

Ive been through what you are about to go through, including the Mackie 8-buss stuff. Stay away from them. If you are thinking about using this console for recording to a 24 track analog the machine, find one that is built for that purpose. Don't compromise here, you will thank me later. A...

    Lost Tapes

And the opposite: What about found tapes? When I was haunting the studios of Hollywood/Burbank a few years back looking for equipment. Many times after doing deals on equipment the offer was made for: take these tapes if you like. now that you bought the machine we have no use for them. LOTS of...

    Your input please...

10 minutes per tape!? An interesting curiosity, but pretty obvious why they didn't catch on. I am sure you will have fun with them though! I am curious why you put all these esoteric projects ahead of your core "keeper" pieces?
