    Flower Pot Guy- Gone?

Either that or he made enough money through overinflated prices that he could retire early...I like your story better...

    Analog Is Dead

I'd agree with him this far: a bunch of fancy gear doesn't make you a better musician/producer. Aside from that, he's cracked, and obviously is trying to justify not investing in quality equipment by telling himself that software plugins sound just as good. But I suppose that most listeners...

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

Not for .rar files, I guess. I got it worked out, now I have to see if the manual will actually help me at all...

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

Thanks, that actually seems like good news. And why the reels would spin one day and not the next? I was thinking something with the controls, but you probably know better than I. I'm compiling a to-do list, so let me see if I got this right. -Open up machine, which will require drilling a...

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

It's a bit rough, yeah. Found something else out today: that regular clicking sound under the hood, a solenoid or something engaging, coincides with with the capstan attempting to turn. Loose belt, perhaps?

    TASCAM 688 issues

Never used a 488, but I have a Tascam 244 which had problems that sound just like yours. I'd suggest getting all new rubber parts: belts and idler tires, or whatever it has. I don't want to speak out of turn, but I think the general rule of thumb around here is that it's a good idea to replace...

Where are they now? Who's left?

Yeah, I have no idea what happened to Beck. You can't even click on him anymore, which seems a bit shady :\ I'll admit, it does seem like a lesser place without the real wise men around... Still, I think this part of Home Recording started up after people emigrated from the Tascam forums, so...

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

I'd rather not give out a figure, but not much, not enough to feel like an idiot just for picking it up in the first place. If I can't sell it whole as a parts machine, I'll be ok talking about prices and stuff like that. I think I'd make money selling any major part off it, and I'd probably...

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

Dunno man, I tried running the transport again this morning, no response. I'd think the first thing I'd have to do is what, take a look at the board connected to the controls? And figure out why the capstan doesn't turn. Both these things are completely beyond me, and I wish I could just pass...

    Fostex Model 80 1/4" 8-track

Not only that, but if your original tapes are sticky, you should look up a procedure on how to bake them so they can be transferred safely.

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

Yeah, would have been nice, but it always seems like these deals come around when I'm completely skint. I've seen Tascam 388s go for $350, a Tascam series 70 for $150, an Ampex AG440 full-track mono for $50 (still kicking myself on that one), a Tascam 34 for $150 that I almost bought (had some...

Ha! Or a warning sign that she's temperamental and not to be trusted. If the tape machine is now a woman, she'll need a name. I'll be back when I figure out which woman I know broke my heart the worst... Still, thanks for the encouragement ;)

Will Analog Multitracks ever be made again?

Wish I could say yes. Really wish I could. I want there to be multitrack machines made again. But it's about as likely to happen as people around the world settling their differences with arm-wrestling matches instead of wars. Before tape machines are made again, people need to change. I...

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

That does sound like good advice, though really with the hassle it would take trying to get it boxed and shipped I'd be better off just parting it out, selling off what I can, and tossing the rest. It's a shame to do it, because from what you guys are saying, it really could be repaired. I'll...

...just when I thought I could be rid of it... :D OK, questions: I couldn't find it on their website, but I thought I'd read a few places that you could send your heads off to JRF and they would tell you how much life was left, either for free or for a small fee. It seems like it would still...

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

Well, now I know! Thanks for responding, guys. I'll admit, I was hoping all I'd need to do is clean it up a bit and drop in a few replacement parts. I certainly don't care how much the looks suffer from its ordeal, but you guys are probably right, it's gonna take a lot of work. I just wish...

Advice needed: Otari MX5050 MkIII8 - worth fixing up?

Hey guys, give me your opinions here. I've been sitting on this machine for more than three years now (hard to believe), still don't know if it's worth it to me to hang onto it. I got it for cheap from a guy who said it belonged to a friend of his, evidently his friend had been a musician but...
