Guys, thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. There's a some good stuff here, and I'm learning a lot!
That show looks really cool, there seems to be a wealth of into on it!
I see! One thing I'd do in that case, if I'm already modifying it anyway, might be to include a 20dB pad as well...
Yeah I guess what I mean is that by doing it the way that guy did, aren't you bypassing the output transformer, which is where most of the nice-sounding color comes from? Plus, you're not going to have as much gain either. Now, if you can get ahold of a few more output transformers, and say...
I've been looking for one too, this might be the key, though having to assemble it is a bit of a drag. I've been looking on ebay at the Tascam, Fostex, etc. units, anyone compared the sound to those?
So YOU'RE who I've been bidding against! I refuse to pay more than $40, but good for you. I'll get mine sooner or later. BTW, there's a guy selling one on ebay that's already modded w/ 4-outs. I asked him about it, and if I understood correctly, he didn't actually add output transformers to...
There's that holding company called (Global Brands) that owns some ghostware brands and I bought a 10-pack of 90min tapes from them, I think that cost me $2.20 each, but the more you buy the lest they cost. I'm testing those out now, and they seem to be good. Also, according to the tapeheads...
Good to know, re: the capstan. I've left tape on the machine for days at a time, but I never left the machine on for any long periods either.
The 244's capstan spins continuously if there's a cassette is, so I guess this means, leave the machine on, take the tape out!
Me neither :O And the tape tension....I'd leave tape on my machine and come back to it a few days later! I guess I need to change my habits...
So does the same thing apply to cassette tapes at all?
Has anyone used the tapes from National Audio Company? I've wanted to try those out with my portastudio, I guess they're out of stock at the moment though...
So I wasn't able to do as much testing as I wanted, perhaps tomorrow or Thursday. What I did find out, however, is that the AT transformer is very sensitive to things like a (perhaps) improperly-wired cable. I had tried that with my other adapter no prob, but try the SM57 and the input...
Hear, hear.
Though from what I've read, bass directly in is kind of SOP for a lot of people. Electric guitar too, if you're taking the output off tape through a guitar amplifier and are remicing that. But acoustic? Yeah, I'd never use the pickup on something I actually wanted to keep...
Yeah, now see, I tried that with my friend's guitar and it was absolutely fine. My guitar, however, doesn't have a pickup, and more noise or not, I think I'd be getting better tone from a mic anyway. I've got a couple different ones to try, the SM57 sometimes just doesn't give me enough level...
I agree with you, I think, though I've read that a passive DI will sound better than a transformer. Whether this is true or not, I dunno, but it's more heavy-duty, probably more reliable. And I'd have the option of using it for more than one application, which would be nice. There is the part...
Yeah, but I've had some sporadic grounding issues with the regular cables, which is kind of what brought this on. Thanks for the suggestion, I decided that for the time being, I might as well get one input transformer, so I got the Audio Technica version from Guitar Center, haven't tried it out...
Sweetbeats, it looks like you scored again, good luck with it!
In the interest of helping you overcome your "problem," I'll take one if they're free... ;)
Because of that vintage sound, first of all. Lonewhitefly used one on several of his albums, and I dig it. They seem to be pretty versatile, as evidenced by the fact that their output gain is enough for them to be used as preamps. Having 4 channels is also going to be a boon to me when...
Yeah man, I'm still trying to wrap my head around some stuff. I always thought XLR was balanced and low Z, and 1/4" was unbalanced and high Z. Now, it seems there are different combinations... :O I'm sure those XLR-TS cables work fine for things like bass drums and floor toms, but I think I...
Yeah I'd really rather spend a little bit extra on quality. Radial sounds like a good brand and everything, but I think their stuff's priced too high for me. Also, evidently, the JDI doesn't have 1/4" outputs, so it's kind of useless to me, unfortunately. Bouldersoundguy's actually explained...
