    Synching two Fostex R 8 r-r machines

I have an opportunity to purchase a Fostex 4035 synchronizer controller. Anyone tried using this to synch two R8s? If so I'd appreciated knowing how you did this and how it works. Thanks.

    Bass downtuning problems....

If you think about it, detuning your strings reduces tension on the neck and may cause it to move down, lowering the action and thereby bringing the strings closer to the frets--thus the fret buzz. If your band plays consistently detuned, you could also detune and adjust the neck accordingly.

    Ugly Guitars

OK, put on your seatbelts...this one takes the cake. Just saw it posted in another thread. The winner is....(drum roll)... http://www.teuffelguitars.de/instrumente/birdfish/index_e.html Thank you very much, and to demonstrate that I have heart, I'll donate the prize money to a worthy cause.

    An exercise in tonal possibilities

Here's something I've learned. When you sit in front of your amp all alone, and try to mess around with your tone, you're never happy. Then when you're in a band and playing out, your tone sounds very different and usually WAY better. I think it's something about obsessing in front of your...

In the coming moments, I'm going to pull all of the hair out of my head.

If you'd be able to afford it, your bass would benefit from a new bridge. The arrangement shown in the picture is not ideal as you are losing a lot of tone due to the poor contact between the strings and the body of the instrument. But that doesn't answer your question. This bridge does not look...

    Cassette tape to CD copying

You should be able to do this with the software that comes with your sound card and CD rom burner (if you don't have one of each, you won't be able to do this at all of course...). Plug your cassette's output into the line input of your sound card and record it using your sound card's software...

    Rookie question..

Aux sends for compression or eq? That's what your channel inserts are for. These require full signal processing not a tap off the main signal which is what an aux is.

    Mackie Vs soundcraft

I have a Soundcraft Studio Spirit LC 16 - 8 - 2 and from almost every viewpoint it's an excellent mixer. Dead quiet, well featured (one plus would be more functionality on the Aux returns). I use it mainly as a recording mixer; it's quiet and versatile, good eqs (3 sweeps) plus fixed-frequency...

Please, not what someone has read or heard second hand. Only if you've actually tried this, please let me know if you thought the difference was worth it. Much appreciated.

How to obtain that tight high-string-tension sound...

It's definitely a 12 string guitar. Also doubled for bigger effect. That's what you're hearing in Amanda.

    Lexicon Alec

Just picked up a Lexicon Alec on Ebay for $81.00. Anyone tried one before? I have various highly programmable FX units in my rack but I liked the idea of something simple that permits you to dial up quick and easy sounds, particularly for live shows where you don't want to fiddle with a lot of...

features a mixer set up with an 8 track should have ?

Without getting into all the details which would take awhile, I would suggest looking at several different makes and models of mixer--but make sure they are mixers designed for recording. You need such things as a signal that goes to your control room monitors, another stereo output for your...

    ping pong

You want to leave bass and drum tracks to the outer tape tracks if possible as you'll get less bleed to adjacent tracks. Also, if you think about it, once you combine and bounce tracks, obviously you'll record over the original tracks and they'll be gone. So from a practical point of view I'd...

    Recording distorted guitars

Another thought--if you're looking for loud distortion, then you're not going to hear hum and hiss while you're playing; it's the quiter moments between. That's where (if you can buy beg borrow steal) a noise gate, it will cut the noise in the places where you're not playing.
