oh, and PFL which allows you to solo the return.

    Ghost.......I finally got a desk!!

Just looking at the website the FX returns can do all that and more, unless we're looking at two different boards. This unit appears to have excellent FX return functionality including eqs, mute, mono/stereo selection, level, submix and main assigns, pan pot, cue (I assume that would be an...

    Ghost.......I finally got a desk!!

One option is to use a regular channel for an effect return which gives you full channel functionality.

    Greetings, and tape storage question.

Also, stack them upright, like books on a shelf. The reel will be less inclined to warp this way since most of the weight of the tape is on the outer part of the reel and can distort it over time.

Panning through mixer to 8 Track

Every track on an 8-12-etc. by virtue of being one track is mono. When you are recording, the pan position should be centred to ensure you're sending the signal full strength to that track. It's only stereo when you play back two or more tracks and pan them out.

    guitar and recording

I've done lots of recording both ways (acoustic and pickup) and they can both sound great. Some guitars sound mediocre unplugged but have a unique and tasty sound when recorded direct, assuming you get the bread and butter stuff (levels, eqs, effects etc.) right. Some guitars are the opposite...

Mixing, mastering, and getting "that" sound...

I too am intrigued and am trying to think how this idea may have come about. I have a theory and I'll test it out here; see if this makes sense. Once I went fishing with a professional guide (I can't fish worth sh't but my brother in law made me go--or bribed me with beer, I can't remember...

Don't forget to warm your tubes...

Passing ones is easier than zeros in my opinion since they are narrower, as long as the ones don't get stuck sideways. Keep your circuits well greased and they should just slide right on through.

A few other ideas on how to add warmth to that cold digital recording. 1. Place your mixer on an electric blanket and suffuse it with heat. 2. Place a hot water bottle on top of your DAW. 3. Make sure the room is painted in warm pastel colors. Warning, if you do all three of these together the...

Guitar players, hang your head low...cause your favorite guitar hero could be next!

I agree the movie was pathetic. I don't even know why I watched it as I had a gut feeling it would suck. Well suck it did, with such a force that it created this strange sensation of making me want to hurl.

    Behringer CT100 Cable Tester

The only thing that's wrong with it is it's so cheap that it doesn't seem like it should be a good unit. But it is.

    Whatever happened to WHITELION?

Didn't White Lion do that sappy song about when the children cry or something like that? That may have contributed to their descent into obscurity...

    How about the MSR-16 recorder

As I mentioned earlier I have an MSR 16 and I also have an old Fostex A-8 which is a precursor to the R-8. The A-8 is basically the same except you can only record up to four channels at a time (even though it's an 8-track). This may be a surprise but the Fostex sounds just as good to me as...

    TEAC RW-D200 CD recorder

I'm looking to buy a cd recorder as a mixdown device for my analog studio. I don't plan to use a PC or other computer. One reader recommended a Pioneer and that is a definite possibility. There seem to be a lot of TEAC RW-D200's around for really cheap and these are all factory refurbished and...

    Mastering wiring...

I'm not sure you'd want to use an auxiliary send/return for an equalizer under most circumstances. Usually eq's and compressors are part of the direct signal path since the intent is to process the entire signal, as opposed to aux send/return which just mixes some effect back into the original...

    How about the MSR-16 recorder

I have an MSR 16 and it's a very nice machine. The sound quality is excellent and it's a very well engineered, solid workhorse.

    Mixdown device

Thanks for sharing your experience--exactly what I was looking for. Gotta love those old Tascams--I got mine in mint condition off Ebay and I really like this unit. I'll check out the Pioneer.

    Mixdown device

I have an analog setup (16 track TASCAM MSR 16) and I'd appreciate any suggestions on what people are using as a mixdown device these days. I don't have a PC in my studio and don't want one there so it would have to be some other type of device (preferably not too expensive) but it need not be...

8 mics for an 8 piece drumset...

I'd question the need to get the big left-to-right pan on a tom fill--geez sounds like we're talking Neil Peart here to think of it--that doesn't contribute to a stereo mix but instead sounds silly and artificial (in my humble opinion). Nothing does that in real life (unless some very inventive...

    Strangest pair of drum overheads...

I love your story Tubedude, that's awesome. Doing stuff like that when you're a kid is some of the best moments of your life and remembering it keeps you young.
