Building a small studio. What next??

I'd start out with: a decent sound card that has enough channels to cover your needs and with good AD/DA conversion (I have no idea about the sound card you mentioned, but the word "Soundblaster" isn't doing much for me); a few decent and usable flavours of microphone; and probably some kind of...

People really have lost their minds.......

 Sweet Jesus! Do you think the people that buy these tapes actually plan to record anything onto them?

    cheap mixer

+1 In that price range I reckon you'll get a better overall quality mixer by spending the bucks on a used unit.

So, you think you are a Crazy sob Audio-Freak?

And how about this for vibration isolation... air filled cushion -> granite block -> padding -> springs -> CD player -> padding -> two granite blocks And this isn't even for a turntable, but a CD player!!!

    Guitar Center Vintage Room experts

I'm pretty sure that the (earlier) single ply/8 screw pickguards like the one in the above auction don't get the green tint over time... That's the 3-ply/11 screw pickguards, which came a little later (I think due to different materials).

    Tube Effect Peddals

I'd look into getting a tube amp first before worrying about the pedals. Tube pedals into a solid state amp just isn't the same. But as far as tube pedals go, the "Tonebone" pedals have their fair share of fans and they come in a few different flavours. Or another one would be the old original...

    Kramer guitars.

I have an 80s Kramer and as a shred style guitar I love it. Those old ones came with original floyd rose locking trems; I believe they were the first guitars that came factory fitted with them. The neck is nice too... not wafer thin like the Ibanez Wizard necks, for example. More strat-like, but...

    electric guitars....always out of tune?

Sounds to me like you have an intonation problem. Do a google search on guitar intonation... that should get you plenty of info on the subject and how to set your intonation properly. Basically, that'll just involve moving your bridge saddles either forward or back a bit. Good luck! ;)

Dolby or dbx: which allows more saturation?

Excellent thread and great info guys! I think I may have to print this one out eventually and add it to my 'tome of wisdom' (basically a folder were I keep this kind of cool info) :) Just wondering, how does one go about demagnetizing tapes? Also (and veering off on a slight tangent here)...

Phantom power unit for TASCAM MX-80 rack mixer...

Thanks for the reply! That's interesting that they wouldn't have released one. I mean, what made them choose to use that funky XLR jack? Does anyone know what kind of current I can pump into the phantom jack? I'm wondering whether the current is reduced at each input via internal resistors...

    Mesa tubes?

And for the record, I think a lot of the Chinese stuff is better than Sovtek. Some of the Chinese tube types are actually some of the better of the new production. But at the end of the day, choosing between these two is like picking the lesser of two evils (IMO of course).

    Mesa tubes?

soundchaser59, There was nothing strange at all about my statements which you quoted (above). JJ and Winged "C" are two completely different tubes from completely different manufacturers. And IMO, the bog-standard Sovtek stuff is basically crap. You're over-simplifying things a lot with your...

    Mesa tubes?

Ok, so I'm guessing that Eurotubes test and pre-sort the tubes into ranges that will suit the Mesas, much like the Mesa labelled tubes. And yes, they are "fixed" bias, but bias-wise, it's the opposite to what you would think it implies. Fixed bias amps need to have the bias checked and adjusted...

    Mesa tubes?

The Mesa labelled tubes are quite crappy, but as dementedchord mentioned, the advantage is that they're sorted into particular bias ranges so you won't have to rebias your amp when you replace them with the same type. If you retube with anything else, your amp will need to be rebiased, or at the...

Chrome (type II) tape only for TASCAM 133?

Ah, that explains a lot actually! I was listening to a few type I music cassettes (commercial releases, so they're "good" recordings) and they seemed to be really bassy -or woolly- sounding, with not much top end. What I like about this deck is the ability to run the tape at high speed, a...
