    Monitors, Pres, Mics, Oh my!

So I guess the general consensus is twards monitors. Now the question is which ones? Budget: about $500-$850 In that range I have looked at things from the BX8a, the mackie HR624, the KRK V8s, and maybe a couple others. My room is about 15' by 16' so 240 sq feet. Dampening includes a bed...

    help!

Well you would need some XLRs for the mics, so Canare is a good brand, I use them my self and can get them for 20 dollars per 25 foot cable. Come to think of it Canare will do for what ever cabling you need. Check ebay there are often auctions for Canare cables, and sometimes if you ask a guy he...

    Monitors, Pres, Mics, Oh my!

That was my thinking from the start, but I wanted to see if anyone else thought otherwise. Before this post my purchase order would have been 2 channels of nice pre amps, then a nice set of monitors, then another nice LDC and a M-201. In that order. With this poll I am starting to wonder though...

    mic panning

Um.. question, am I the only one who pans drums to the listener's perspective? ie low tom to the left, mid tom to the center, and high tom to the right? Also I usually put the ride to the left and crash on the right, with other effect somewhere in between.

    Monitors, Pres, Mics, Oh my!

First of all what makes monitors missing in high frequencies, these have a 1" tweeter that they claim can go up to 30 khz. Is there any way of finding frequency response graphs similar to what are provided with mics? Secondly, I did just purchase these in an upgrade to altec lansing computer...

    Monitors, Pres, Mics, Oh my!

Anyone think it's a bad idea that I am mixing on my Definitive Technologies Pro 100 monitors and Pro 100 sub? I know it is recomended to use nearfield monitors and they are sure somewhere down the line but with my set up is that the next step or somewhere after new pres, new converters and new...

    Cable Storage

I use a file cabinet. Put a plastic file holder in it. Put cables in file holder. Take cables out when needed. If it is a remote recording, take whole file container with me. If you don't know what I am talking about when I say plastic file holder, it is like a tupperware container for...

    preamp comparison

Might want to look at the Neve portico. Its around $1500 and from the samples on The Listening Session it sounds amazing. I've been looking where to pick one up but so far no luck. On another not the other great $2000 pair that sounds great and fairly similar, the Great River, is now available...

    $1,000.00 Question??

No you probably wouldn't. They are both classified as lower end pres. With $1000 I would probably recomend getting the RNC or the RNLA which ever you prefer, and then spending the rest on a really nice pre. If you must get a set then do what you must but then you would be moving back into the...

    604: stereo pair?

Yeah, I meant the MXL 604s the replacement to the 603s. I think I'll give them a try. I'd go with the matched pair of the 603s but I like the advantage of the omni and cardinoid capsules, not to mention the -10db pad in the 604s.

    604: stereo pair?

I'm lookin at picking up a decent pair of SDCs for one of my friends for the holidays. Now I'd like to keep the price down so here is my question: Even though the 604 is only offered as a single mic, if I purchased two over the internet with out being able to test them, would the sound of the...

Any condenser? No not nessisarily. Though I am no lover of the SM-57 by any strech of the imagination, (I have not owned one to date) I do believe there are far worse mics that you can buy. No I haven't tried the AKG Perception 100, (haven't heard of it either) but there are pleanty of...

trying to record a grand piano

Do you have to spend thousands to get a good recording? -No But you do need to invest some if you want something useable. I don't know what type of pre you have but with your interface that is the first step. A solid recomendation is the FMR RNP which gives you two channels of preamplification...
