Fleetwood Mac - "Dreams" - WTF is this, magic?!

Ah that must be it :) I love reharmonizing... kinda specialty of mine. If no-one else picks up on the Easter egg soon I'll let it out I promise! Could have transposed it but I'd prefer not to. [EDIT: I'm naturally a baritone BTW.] At first I thought a lady friend of mine might do the vocals...

Fleetwood Mac - "Dreams" - WTF is this, magic?!

Well, for all the 57 views here, y'all are really talkative! Anyway, slight tweaks to reverb, sidechain comp, and master bus processing: Thanks again for constructive criticism! Oh, and for the record -- never, ever, EVER try mixing on a laptop while half-asleep:spank:

    What DAW are you using?

True, that's more than can be said of mine!

Fleetwood Mac - "Dreams" - WTF is this, magic?!

Hi all! I posted a clip of the vocals on this project in the Microphones sub-forum, so sorry if you saw this one coming :) Featuring... Me actually performing the following: - Vocals (on my newly acquainted AKG D125) - Fender Rhodes MkII (suitcase) emulator on lead keys - Fender Rhodes...

    "Takes EQ well"...hmmm?

There may be a hint here... from what he's saying I'm guessing it may refer to lower Q curves on the frequency response, resulting in less unpleasant surprises when making EQ adjustments. At the 19:02 mark:

    New to recording.

That sounds like some really interesting music you'd be making... I'll let the others give setup advice, but I look forward to maybe hearing some samples of your music! Cheers!

    Mastering Headroom

Thanks for the heads-up @bouldersoundguy! I'll be keeping all this in mind next time I do some renders in various formats.

    What DAW are you using?

That thing is really impressive... but soo expensive! (like all SSL stuff lol)

Recommendations for a darker, smoother dynamic vocal mic.

Sorry for the delay, here is a sample of the AKG D125. These are from a quick preliminary take. I added a foam windscreen (affecting some consonants a bit) but I'm thinking that when I do final takes for this project I'll take it off. Dry: Processed:

Recommendations for a darker, smoother dynamic vocal mic.

Velvet is the word that comes to mind. I am eq'ing out a bit of proximity -- the "wooly" part -- but the top end is just really smooth. I'm guessing falsetto is perhaps not what you have in mind, but I could post a clip of what I currently have recorded if you'd like.

Recommendations for a darker, smoother dynamic vocal mic.

I recommend an AKG D125. Just found one by rummaging around in forgotten drawers at a church, brought it home, really smooth and darker than the Shure SMs you mentioned. My voice naturally has a bit of harshness, and it seems to get rid of it entirely. I'm working on a project right now with it...

"Getting Back Into It" - Tips on revisiting old projects / how to get back into recording.

@Bobby Layne -- Analog Obsession plugins are all free, and are my go-to for almost anything. Particularly the SSQ (eq), KONSOL (preamp/saturation), and LALA (LA-2A emulation). Highly recommend. If you can spare a bit of cash, do get a Cubase upgrade. That's one thing that I'm gonna go at some...

Study on rock production and audience trends

I'm well aware of the worthlessness of so many music- (and arts in general) related programs out there nowadays. However -- I'm not sure how far one can expect to go without a degree. @rob aylestone (and others, if you're actually in the business), how would you recommend that young folks get a...

    Tascam Score

Hmm -- not sure! Somehow the way they branded themselves (especially their older gear) never seemed very attractive to me... Though their newer Model 12 looks really handy!

    Tascam Score

Wow, I've always been a bit prejudiced against Tascam as a whole, but that's a nice setup for sure!

Completely new to tape recording, buying a Tascam MF-P01 to take in to rehab with me, can I ask a couple very basic questions?

True, there's no tweaking of the mix -- you get the tracks and can play them back together, but unbalanced. Good to keep that in mind.

Completely new to tape recording, buying a Tascam MF-P01 to take in to rehab with me, can I ask a couple very basic questions?

"Cassette sound" and "tape sound" are somewhat similar but the sound you're referring to right now is not achieved on portable recorders like these. It's like tube preamps -- high-level stuff, expensive and quite useless for you and me. From what you just added to my understanding of your...

Completely new to tape recording, buying a Tascam MF-P01 to take in to rehab with me, can I ask a couple very basic questions?

Do you already own the recorder? If not I would strongly recommend getting a digital equivalent: Zoom H4N. It may be detrimental to the idea of sharing the tape with your friend (if his is also a tape 4-track), but nowadays that's the easy, fast way to do it. If you (or your friend) have as...

    Cancelled Recordings

Ack sounds like you missed out on a nice lil project there... I've had to sign a contract as a freelancer once, the obvious benefit is that once it's signed you (generally) won't get any last minute changes. The way people don't read email thoroughly and downplay agreements as "verbal agreement"...
