Cheat or not cheat? That might be the question

They can indeed sing. That is not in question. What I am apparently alone on, is their assessment. Good, not great. Competent, not Callas.

used discontinued, a Sterling Audio "Aspen Pittman" ST69 in 2025

I suppose the people there probably did not have the ability to test? I suppose the tube is the likely culprot but the cable and power supply might also be the problem? Do you have the same system as we have in the UK? We can just send anything mail order back for a refund. If it is faulty, they...

    Can you ID this mic?

Of course they do and they are also very good singers who have good ears. However if they had to sing to a track they would need speakers or IEMs and speakers colour the sound. I cannot help it if you don’t understand. I’m not going to attempt to convince you as we both differ so much. The...

Cheat or not cheat? That might be the question

No Rich - it IS a big deal when we talk about the tiniest features of recordings all the time - people with mixes they have worked on for ages, that when they put them up, they find somebody spots the fret buzz, the one poorly bent note, the mistimed snare all those things. We are all working on...

    Can you ID this mic?

She is a nicer sounding singer to me but that is irrelevant. I’m qualified to assess dance yet I cannot dance a step as I have poor coordination. I am not a great pianist but I am competent to judge them. She is like many untrained people. Singing by common sense and either has no singing...

Cheat or not cheat? That might be the question

As we've been talking about it in another topic, I found this youtube video talking about recording in garages. I note their aunt has been in touch. I think the evidence suggests very strongly this is NOT the acoustics of that garage space. Pretty objective, I think.

Earthworks PM40 and AEA R88 mk2 for piano.

The earthworks is a great system for live sound from a grand - so broadcast and live shows benefit from a decent sounding instrument. The snag is that you need to process it to make the perspective match. So it needs sympathetic reverb and control over the width. It is also quite dependent on...

I said I wouldn't reply any more, but I lied. Exactly the same comments as before. Theyre good. Not great. She has also picked up bad habits a singing teacher should have counselled her out of. The vibrato is still uncontrolled, so she has probably left that too long and its embedded. He is the...

Bernstein, The greatest 5 min. in music education

Makes me feel a bit lacking how easy he does that - like Jacob Collier. The trouble with Bernstein's music is it's so damn hard. West Side Story - caused me to really sweat. Lose your place and you cannot get back in. Totally unpredictable. I have played bass in two productions over the years...

    Your nostalgic gear...

1996 was the turning point for me, ADATs and DAT changed everything. Still not perfect, but live sound that didn't hiss was the real thing - not actual record quality in many cases. The reel to reels were retired with a snap of the fingers.

This is getting silly! The example of you singing in an untreated room sounds like what i expect the room sounds like. The kids in the car park magically have cathedral reverb on them but not the backing piano, and the acapella kitchen sounds like a kitchen. I am NOT saying they are bad singers...

    Can you ID this mic?

That's kind of how I saw it Rich - people at the start of their career with growing to do - that said, It was a VERY long time ago she was in Miss Saigon as a newbie. The girl in the video has a good voice on the recording, but not really stand out in the crowd. Loads of people are this standard...

Vocal and guitar mixing and mastering

With an acoustic guitar and vocal - many of the categories for comment are difficult. It's not really a mix with just two sources, just one balanced against the other. Personally I hate compression on this kind of music, because it rarely needs it, as you're going for realism rather than...

What’s a good laptop for production

Never worked for me. My mac mini has loads of external storage, but despite my best efforts, far too much stuff requires being on the internal drive. So annoying. Spent ages last night trying to make more space. No huge files, just crazy numbers of smaller ones. Cubase now needs lots of space...

    Can you ID this mic?

Sorry. I would need to hear her in an audition room, live. Lots of the colleges churn out nice singers, but can she sing two shows a day for months? Nowadays, newcomers for dance and MT do showreels which get them access to the audition room, but until they have the MD and just a piano, you...

What’s a good laptop for production

While I now have lots of macs of all ages, my most recent computer for audio and video was a PC - Macs infuriate me because of the HUGE premium price for decent size hard drives. My old macbook won't upgrade because the drive has not enough space, and this macbook is now giving me storage space...

    Can you ID this mic?

Well - one of the good examples of this particular song is this version by Lea Salonga who I first heard in the original Miss Saigon. You will also see hear throat muscles working very hard in the crescendo - something missing from the video. Nothing in this video rings warning bells at all -...

What’s a good laptop for production

In honesty, very few latest laptops of any kind will not be fine. All now have pretty decent processors and with plenty of ram you are away. Most people end up with lots of externals hanging on. Drives with big capacity are vital when your samples, vsts and other stuff takes up huge space. On...

Got banned/restricted on distrokid for no reason

Dont forget that the meta organisation who are linked to facebook and others now have a ban on certain music styles, so when distrokid and others submit the music, they get rejected. Classical, repetitive, whale sound, noises and other material are now on the naughty list. I wonder if it...

    Can you ID this mic?

I use Spectral Layers, from Steinberg. Does a pretty decent job on most music. Splits off vocals, drums, bass, piano and bass, but can be tweaked quite a lot. It can do lots of things, creating stems just one of them. I use it sort of in reverse when creating backing tracks for performers. I...
