Adding gain to a USB mic? Audix USB12

Yeah, problem is, I don’t have access to the computer settings and can’t install any software (privacy/security reasons). And sometimes I dictate for 13 hours straight. I can only speak loudly for so long. I was hoping there was some internal pot I could crank up. Wishful thinking I know. A...

Adding gain to a USB mic? Audix USB12

I bought an Audix USB12 to dictate at work…but the output is really low. The software I use doesn’t allow me access to manually increase the gain. Adjusting it in windows doesn’t affect how it’s heard in the software. I reached out to Audix and they had no solution for me. So, I’m basically...

Hanging Tree (Remake by my 12 yo daughter)

Funny you should ask. That’s the thing that jumped out to me on this last one…on further listening, the saturation poked out way too much for some reason. Maybe I changed the plugin order, or added more at some other point in the chain with a compressor or something. I’m not sure what I did, but...

Hanging Tree (Remake by my 12 yo daughter)

Ok, so I couldn’t help myself and added some bass. I also added some hip hop type kick with weird saturated delay. I tried to keep the intelligibility and vibe. Not sure if I succeeded, but here’s another round.

Hanging Tree (Remake by my 12 yo daughter)

Awesome, thanks. I definitely added too much presence and dropped the guitar too low in an attempt to make the latter version more intelligible. I’ll see what I can do to tame this one and get a little of the feel of the original back without being too distracting with effects.

Hanging Tree (Remake by my 12 yo daughter)

Here’s one with a little more vocal forward with less reverb/saturation. Any better? Edit: I just saw your last post. I think we were posting at the same time. I’m not sure what you meant about the 1-5k. I’m sure you stated it correctly, I’m just not a pro at this! Thanks!

Hanging Tree (Remake by my 12 yo daughter)

Great advice. I’ll go back and try to clean things up. I rarely add Verb to vocals, but since this one is sparse I thought it needed some. I tried the Soundtoys Little Plate for the first time on these vocals. It’s a great sounding reverb. I only had it at about 30%, but I agree it’s a little...

Hanging Tree (Remake by my 12 yo daughter)

This was a fun one. My 12 yo daughter wanted to make her own version of Hanging Tree from the new Hunger Games movie. We starting messing with it and I made it this big blues type tune. She did a great job on the vocals. I tried to keep it raw with just guitar and vocals, but big with reverb and...

    Pop Punk mix feedback

Awesome, another Pop Punker on this forum! I’ll be posting my own from time to time. PM me when you post new tunes, I’d love to check them out! I put one up a couple weeks ago as my first entry to this forum. Not super polished, but my time is limited and I record all the parts…so I do what I...

Original Tune: The things I never won (Pop Punk/Alternative Rock)

Thanks for the input. “Rocks out well”…great comment , ha…I’ll take it! You’re the second person to mention the loudness. I’ll need to figure out how to get this right (not that I’m trying to put it on iTunes or Spotify). Maybe it will sound a little clearer if I back it off a bit. Thanks again!

Original Tune: The things I never won (Pop Punk/Alternative Rock)

Definitely, thanks for the feedback. I’ll go back and listen with that in mind. I don’t always mind dropping the vocals a little lower in parts, but I’ll go back through for another critical listen. It’s basically impossible to mix your own stuff objectively! Between all the takes on all the...

Original Tune: The things I never won (Pop Punk/Alternative Rock)

That’s great info, thanks! I understand most of it, lol! Maybe I can just aim a little lower if I’m going to convert to mp3. What do you use to convert to mp3? I just pull the WAV into iTunes and then convert it in there. There’s probably much better software! This site is awesome, much...

Original Tune: The things I never won (Pop Punk/Alternative Rock)

Interesting, so I use a mastering plugin (Brainworx bx_Masterdesk) that I adjust the overall level and add a little more compression as a final step on the master bus in Ableton. Would your analysis tell us if it’s clipping before it hits the master bus?..because the plugin looks like is coming...

Original Tune: The things I never won (Pop Punk/Alternative Rock)

Thank you for the feedback! I think you’re right and I over corrected a bit. It goes without saying, it’s so hard to balance things just right! Out of curiosity, are you comparing the mixes side by side, or to a different comparison track of the same genre? Just asking because I also tend to...

    Dirt Roads - Original

You bet! Take it or leave it, but they are my opinions and I stand by them! That’s just like me with drums/vocals. I’ve done my best to pick them up over the years so I can make music. I’m definitely stronger at guitar and bass (though there were some sloppy parts I leave in a lot of my tunes...

Original Tune: The things I never won (Pop Punk/Alternative Rock)

Thanks, I dive into this genre often. Yeah, the vocals are repetitive at that point, the listener has heard them already, so I just wanted to swallow them up with newer more interesting elements. I’m not afraid to put the vocals on the back burner from time to time for the overall effect!

    Dirt Roads - Original

That’s funny, I enjoyed the second mix better. A definite improvement to me. Only thing that jumped out to me (treated room with Neumann KH120, medium volume) was that the vocals are a little too loud in the verses. They sit PERFECTLY in the chorus. Listen, for example, to the transition right...

Original Tune: The things I never won (Pop Punk/Alternative Rock)

Thanks for the feedback. Mix not as harsh or bassy. Allows a little more room for the vocals. I also added a weird sound effect intro (I reversed a bunch of cymbals and broken glass, lol). Doesn’t catch you quite as off guard this way. Any better? Thanks!
