What Is It That Compells Me…

Nothing wrong with what you're doing at all. 1. you're restoring something that would end up in a landfill 2. you're satisfying the deep seated need, as a virgo I understand, to clean something up that has potential 3. it's a hobby, nothing ever wrong with that 4. you're practicing your skill...

    Tascam parts

Jim, @wkrbee, I emailed you a few days ago asking about the MS-16 head block you had for sale. Please get back to me. Thanks!

NKD (New Keyboard Day!) – Roland Juno-X just arrived today!

Roland just announced this last week and I was lucky to get in on the first order coming in from Musicians Friend. I own and love my Fantom 7, one of the best Roland keyboards (platform really) that I’ve ever owned. And I‘m so proud of Roland for taking such good care of us owners these days...

    Tascam M520 Story...

I have three ProCo 48s 2 PB32P 1 PB32B (balanced) I was hoping to add one more. I’ll look into the Furman 40, maybe sell the ProCos and load up on that 40, makes total sense!

Using phantom power with a balanced TRS patch bay

Thanks Jay, I'm seeing your point on that. The largest problem with the ART MPAII is that it doesn't have input on the front for XLR mic in. That was why I was going to connect it to a patch bay to insert where needed, which is what led me to thinking I'd have the MIC plugged into the XLR patch...

Using phantom power with a balanced TRS patch bay

All analog set up: Tascam M-520 20x8 console Tascam MS-16 16 Channel 1" Multitrack recorder I have multiple patch bays set up between the console, recorder in/out, out to daw, outboard gear, 2 track 1/4" mastering deck, 2 track cassette, CDRW and so on. as well as inputs for keys and guitars...

Using phantom power with a balanced TRS patch bay

Thanks Rob, My plan is to have the ART 16 channel XLR patch bay on the front of my vertical rack to easily plug in mics as needed to channels 1-16 on my console. By using the PB-32B (balanced patch bay) in between it and the console, and nothing is patched, it should just route direct to the...

    Tascam M520 Story...

That’s good, I’d prefer full normal for those units, but love that my ProCo PM148s are so easily switchable so I can use top and bottom as needed. Very handy!! Hope to get out there to test those meters tonight or tomorrow day. I’ll let you know what I find out. Oh, and if you ever want to sell...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Thanks, I’ll remember that. Yes, heavily exercised the switch and used Deoxit on it as well. No, doesn’t matter what source it is, nada. The Tascam PB-32p says it’s half normalled but when I patch, say, #5 to Track 1, no signal is transmitting (via meter on front of MS-16) to Track 5. So far...

Using phantom power with a balanced TRS patch bay

What are your thoughts on this? I have a Tascam PB-32B balanced TRS 1/4” patch bay. My ART XLR 16 channel patch bay is connected to it, then TRS 1/4” to XLR going to my Tascam M-520. Although the preamps in the M-520 are nice, I’m trying to figure out a way to use my ART MPAII tube pre amp and...

    Tascam M520 Story...

SORRY, I’m an idiot. SOLO/PFL is not working on Stereo B monitors but in headphones. But it works via Stereo A monitors AND in Headphones. The only reason I won’t be using Stereo A is because i can’t get VU levels on 9/10, so I’m using Stereo B for monitoring via speakers right now. But the...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Okay, re-tested it just now. Operator error first test, glad I took another look since every day I'm learning more and more about this board. I had the SOLO volume knob turned all the way down over by the headphones. Turned up, SOLO works in both STEREO A and STEREO B just fine... but no 9/10...

Let me do another test today just to make sure I'm not being misleading by not remembering correctly. I DO remember that solo did not work in headphones though. I'll get back on this today!

    Tascam M520 Story...

Thanks, I'll try that 7/8 into 9/10 meter test first, it's fairly easy to get at. Removing the console will be a days work but I would like to sort it out before I do any tracking on the MS-16 b/c I think I'd really like to be able to use the Solo function.

    Tascam M520 Story...

So, I’ve been so busy and decided to just keep working on other parts of my studio for now, I haven’t had a chance to retest using 7/8 meters. Curious though, is the only way to further diagnose this problem to open up from bottom? Can anything be done from the top Of the channel section? If so...

Explaining “what style of music do you write?”

Thanks everyone, good to hear others perspectives. Summing up much of what I see here, I think "follow your own" is the main theme. What comes out of our heads comes out and accept it for what it is. I know that many successful songwriters or artists it's really all about sheer quantity. The...

Explaining “what style of music do you write?”

Thanks @spantini nice to know I’m not the only one. Not that I expect my songwriting to just magically instantly be the best stuff ever just because I am planning to really try this time, but I really want to try to find my direction, at least somewhere to start with a direction and then see...

Explaining “what style of music do you write?”

Part 1:I get asked this question all the time when I tell someone I’m a musician or building a studio. I actually haven’t written a ton of songs on my own and at 50 years old now, I’m hoping to try to do some different things combining all my favorites and influences over the years. If I tell...
