Mac users: Logic Pro or Reaper?

Reaper is a totally legit industry standard daw. If you already have it then stick with it. I use Logic, perhaps I will never move away from it? If I was forced to for whatever reason, I would certainly try Reaper. I would only hope it had score editor and some basic flex/pitch functions. If...

    all the lies

Hard panning doesn't sound very good to me! I want to try panning the CLA way, and as you suggested. When I hard pan, those guitars become too much, So I'm going to spend a lot of time bouncing down a few mixes tomorrow with a much more narrow image for something to listen back to later to see...

    all the lies

There is absolutely no problem with me understanding your posts, keep it as it is! I am asking a lot of different things anyway, I am not exactly making it easy for you to keep track of things. I would much rather buy analogue than plugins. I was never a fan of those (pay monthly fees to use...

    all the lies

Hey Joey, it's good to see you checking back in here, I am just slowly reading through your last messages again. I actually do not record vocals, I typicaly record instrumental. Sometimes I will do the odd cover and replace the vocal with a guitar. The 1 mic, U87 should be perfect for me, it...

    all the lies

Hey Rob, it was really interesting to see that comparison video, that was a very valuable video for me to watch. Your voice took a good step forward when you switched to the U87, it's a very smooth mic (listening on laptop right now though, but I will listen again in studio soon). I definitely...

    all the lies

Ah, the 421 was mentioned in this thread, I got confused. I do own one but I do not use it enough. There was a sound I was impressed with by a guy over in the academy that uses a 421 and 57 (on top of each other) similar to an XY configuration except both mics are on axis. in the vanilla...

It creates more seperation, gives your ear the impression the low end is tighter and adds an important percussive element. Dave Pensado saturates 9k a little for extra grit/control in one of his (mixing acoustic guitar) videos from memory. So I have this in the back of my mind to try out also...

I noticed though, boosting the air band 10k or wherever that nice pick attack is while reducing 1-5khz reduces harshness but increases brightness while conveniently clearing space for the lead instrument/vocal. A lot of old analogue EQ's do this by design upon thought (maybe for a good reason!)...

Cheers man I have been beating my head up the wall for a while on this subject. I am getting closer to working it out and when I do, I will get back to you on it! It's so time consuming working this stuff out so if i can save you a bit of time I will.

    all the lies

Looking forward to going through everything in this thread, Rob, nice work on what you have done so far. I'll definitely check it all out as soon as I can. I saw some of your video but I ran out of time You own the U87, surely you would rather use that mic for a bedroom production given a...

    all the lies

First of all I want to thank you for that very detailed post. You definitely know exactly what you are talking about because after many many hours of tweaking EQ balances with endless test recordings I noticed that a few things you said that are which are completely unintuitive are what I...

    all the lies

That's very kind of you to offer advice, I do believe the pros only give you breadcrumbs of information to keep you hooked. I have asked technical questions, I have been ignored. I've dug deep and struggle to find answers, it's very difficult to work these things out by yourself, it can be a...

Introduction: My struggle with home recording

guitar tone is good, recording is good. It's just really mid range pronounced and is sitting on top of the mix again dominating it. turn it down and if it's still poking out a little scoop somewhere 800-1500 maybe to sit it down. It's a rhythm guitar part, it's not going to sound the same as...

Introduction: My struggle with home recording

A long pre-delay doesn't bring it forward, it just doesn't push it back as much as a short predelay. Funny enough saw this the other day.

Introduction: My struggle with home recording

I only use limiters to take care of stray transients, or to aggressively control those peaks in a vocal (pre-compressor) with more natural settings. My limiter is reducing 2-4db quite steadily, occasionally can hit like 8 or 9db on a nasty spike. I don't think a limiter is the right tool for...

Introduction: My struggle with home recording

Reverb always does the same thing, pushes tracks back. If you want it to transparantly push back, .2 second decay room verb (i prefer algorithmic most times), if you want a verb to push back as an effect 2-4 second decay hall, plate whatever. In my experience settting an ambient verb up with...

Introduction: My struggle with home recording

Spitting nails is awesome actually. You can tell it's an amp sim, so dry and up front, I like the tone though, in my opinion if you mixed it in properly with the drums this would be all that's needed. You can boost high end, it wouldn't hurt as previously said but honestly I didn't mind it...

Introduction: My struggle with home recording

Post something, I can't advise on anything whatsoever without hearing something. If you say your guitars are muddy and brittle at the same time then you haven't got enough mids though. And miking up a real guitar amp can be much much easier to get a pretty damn good recording than tweaking...

Why are Macs "better" for recording/mixing?

If my Mac broke tomorrow. I would be torn on what to do next. PC would be a serious consideration. I kinda want to give the middle finger to Apple for taking the piss a few years back. (dongles for everything, getting rid of magsafe charger, headphone jack etc.) Edit: I feel committed though...

Why are Macs "better" for recording/mixing?

I brought a macbook pro because they are whisper quiet. My old PC rig was LOUD! I couldn't get decent recordings while in the same room as the PC and well..... y'know, running cables outside and running backwards and forwards to the PC every take was no fun. Apart from that, sod all difference...
