    Mixing SOS

These forums need lengthy thought provoking posts like yours every now and then. Discussions and ideas don't flow without them. I was dissapointed in a few people here driving people away and shutting them down recently. We lost somebody very valuable recently because of it. Still, it's not as...

    Which frequency grates the most

    Grasping 3 band eq

Load up EQ then Spectrum analyzer after it, add a white noise generator. Now you can see exactly what your EQ moves are doing. For me a 3band EQ is practically useless unless I'm working with tracks that are recorded in good rooms, I'm needing to cut very aggressive at 150hz - 250hz with a very...

In Need Of Advice/Help With My Mix

The rhythm guitar sounding harsh on laptops or phones is something I struggled with a lot in the past, it's out of balance so try a little bit of de-essing at 3 or 3.5khz, and if removing a little of that frequency does not work with a static EQ because you said it sounds muffled then try...

What ? Eh ? Run that by me again ?

Yeah, if a signal is out of phase by 180 degrees it's just late I thought I always say "Flipping the phase" though because I really don't care. There are people out there that say phase is important on single mik'd sources like a kick drum. They want the push of the waveform to happen first on...

    Starting from zero. DAW suggestion

I couldn't get back to you yesterday, squeezing some time out of the morning to reply here. If recording organic instruments alongside writing midi (like me) I do not know what is the best DAW, but so far for me I LOVE LogicX. It has score editor so I can write whatever I want in piano roll and...

    Starting from zero. DAW suggestion

FLstudio is hands down the best midi oriented DAW out there and I believe one of the cheapest also. I'll say it how it is, I only wish I had people willing to say it how it is to me whenever I start heading in the wrong direction. To not judge is impossible, it's completely natural and it is...

    Starting from zero. DAW suggestion

didn't read all the thread. subscriptions are a con, you never own it and a company can just lock you out of it like avid did with the russians. People must have mental health issues or are seriously misguided if they literally subscribe to plugins and sample packs for years throwing money...

    Mastering Thought for the Day

This is how I learn to mix. Nothing more valuable than getting the best mix you can and having someone who is pro to master it then trying to match the master with your mix, or trying to "beat" the master. There is no better way

    M-Audio signal is too hot

roll back the volume on the guitar then strum as loud as you can and make sure it doesn't clip. That will get you by for now. I would use a DI box if it were me though.... I'm supersticious about leaving the guitar volume on 10 and would rather step it down with a PAD on a DI box

EQ/Effects suggestions for 12 string acoustic with passive pickup.

Does it sound great out of the PA just because it's louder and you are hearing the sound interact with your room? Is it actually the same dry signal you are recording into your DAW? can you play your recording back out through the PA and that would be something that sounds good to you? You can...

    Mixing trade offs

I'm only talking about the advice (If it sounds good, it is good). Of course there are no rules. I don't care about the 1%. Once a mix translates to every speaker. I'm done. This is my number 1 priority at all times. I'd rather listen to a bad mix with a good song idea (as long as it...

    Mixing trade offs

You'll probably hear the phrase (It doesn't matter what it sounds like in solo, it matters what it sounds like in the mix) just as often as (If it sounds good, it is good) My point being you need to make something sound (not good). So you'll fight your instincts... how (not good) do I make this...

    Mixing trade offs

Big discussions on the thoughts of people who say this lately in my circles. Seems people who say this instantly lose every ounce of credibility they once had. Everyone knows it's far from as simple as that otherwise everyone would be doing killer mixes. The comment comes across as condescending...

    Mixing trade offs

It's not a rule but if your track needs to be up front and loud then having lots of reverb on it can help to make the track less obnoxiously loud. It turns the effect more into a feature if your other tracks are lower in volume giving lots of space around it but can be tricky to mix if your...

    Clipping/peaking out

Have you got any experience with the ARTtubeV3? I have it but I'm not so sure I'm getting the most from it. Are you looking at the gain reduction meter and slamming it? Or are you looking to just make it fluctuate slightly? Let's say you're recording acoustic guitar (strumming) is the unit...

    Mastering without compression?

ReaComp, nice to know. I'll try it out at some point. L2 is THE limiter, I wish others would have that handy level matching handle. I wish it was a standard feature for every limiter

    Mastering without compression?

Nice. I see it's a compressor and limiter in 1 with lookahead. I'd buy it if I wasn't so tight

    Mastering without compression?

Don't use compression as a limiter, it has an attack time, even if setting the attack time to the fastest and at the highest ratio. A decent limiter has a lookahead time.

    Mastering without compression?

I compress even the best vocal takes....... heavily, then limit. I personally don't see the point of compressing on the way in unless you want control so you can record hotter through analogue gear
