I'd like to be able to use VST, it seems that there's tons more shareware for VST available, but I've heard Cakewalk's wrapper is not that good. Any other comments?

We're having problems with my drum tracks. I'm hearing a cyclical pattern where the sound fades in and out as if an oscillator had been applied. Could this be phasing? If so I should be able to correct it by moving the mics around, right?
