Can't Get Guitar to sound right when recording

At the risk of being a bad guy……Here it comes. You’re wasting your time with fiddling with tone knobs and mic placement. No amount of ‘eq fixes’ will fix the lack of confidence that comes through in your recordings. You need to work on your playing. There have been plenty of of suggestions...

    Ok...What Did I Do Wrong ?

Sounds like the middle pickup is out of phase with the humbuckers. As to the 3 wire humbucker….. it used to be that splitting a pickup used 4 wires. Two were soldered together and when they touched ground it shorted out one coil giving you a single coil sound. 3 wire is the same thing, it’s...

My Fostex A8 runs for a little while and then it stops being able to record and dont know why?

I don’t think the new tape would be sticky. You have a clean tape path? Here’s a wild guess but who knows….. Might need new belts? As the belts heat up they start slipping. After it cools down they work for a bit until they heat up again. Belts do stretch out and heat has an effect on them...

Can't Get Guitar to sound right when recording

The playing is a bit rough, but your tone is better than some previous clips you put up. So, there is improvement!

I tried to treat my very small home studio; I’m now looking for advice to make it better as I think I’ve over done it.

People starting a thread, especially those asking for help, and NOT contributing to their own thread is disrespectful in my opinion. But on the flip side, member responses may help others. So it’s not a total waste.

Can't Get Guitar to sound right when recording

I’ve always had better luck recording with a smaller body acoustic.

Can't Get Guitar to sound right when recording

One can get too carried away. You end up putting a magnifying glass on just your guitar sound. The important thing is how it fits and sounds in the mix. I’ve heard many isolated guitar tones that on their own sound like garbage, but in the mix sound great.

    RWRP middle pickup question

2 and 4 are my personal favorite strat positions. Number 4 was Rory Gallagher’d favorite position. :thumbs up:

    RWRP middle pickup question

I have a strat with a Duncan hot rails. I reversed the hot rails. No more out of phase. But it was in position 4. Is your out of phase in position 2?

    RWRP middle pickup question

Then it would be just like a normal vintage strat with no hum canceling in positions 2 and 4.

    RWRP middle pickup question

Yes. Reverse wind is to create the noise cancellation when in the number two position. Reverse polarity creates the out of phase which is giving you your thin sound. It’s not so obvious when paired up with a humbucker, but sounds horrible with single coils (my opinion. Some may like that sound)

    TASCAM M-520

For me a patchbay is invaluable. I’m running 16 tracks of tape, 2 interfaces, one 8 channel and one 16 channel. Cable runs are real short, and being able to plug in and out, where and what I want without going to the back of the mixer is priceless. But this thread isn’t about me and how I use...
