A dimension of Zakk Wylde's playing....

A dimension of Zakk Wylde's playing that most probably haven't heard. I always hear people say that he is all pinch harmonics and wailing. He has a touch and always plays with emotion. No low tuned pinch harmonics here, and a little different vibe than he usually has in his more well known...

    Tube amp problem!

All of a sudden my amp (a Red Bear MK120) started flaking out on me. It is an all tube amp, made in russia, imported by gibson in the 90's. Soundwise it is somewhere between a JCM800, and some say a soldano. A really nice, unique sounding amp. Anyway, I suspect the tubes need to be changed...

New Line 6 Spider III Samples

http://www.line6.com/spideriii/sounds01.html This pretty much represents the latest in amp modeling technology. Man, has modeling come a long way. Yea, yea I know it will never sound as good as a well mic'ed mesa boogie, marshall, etc tube amp. But it sure gets close enough for a guitar player...

This is by the same band I posted last week. Not really my kind of music, but I kinda dug the riffs. My only involvement was recording/production. As always, feedback, comments, constructive criticism on the recording is welcome.... Regret is in (MP3 128kb)

Examples of tape compression or tape 'clipping' in well known recordings?

I am trying to get an idea of what the effect is when you push to the point of getting some analog clipping when recording to tape. What are some well known recordings made over the years that would be a good example to listen to in order to hear this? Thanks! A.

What % of main stream Metal/Rock recordings have the bass recorded direct?

I am just kind of curious what the industry 'standard' is. Do more big name metal or hard rock productions record bass direct, mic the bass cab, or a combination of the two? Thanks, amra

    Sorry! Double post -please ignore

The MR-8 is a great little portable 8 track digital recorder. It has 2 mic preamps, built in. I got it for use recording live performances, jam sessions, and other "on location" type events, but I have since upgraded to a full blown PC recording interface for remote recording. These sold for...

    Input Faders (cubase)?

What purpose do the input faders server in Cubase? It would seem that they would have to be "post AD converter", so wouldn't really prevent digital clipping. I had a discussion a while back with a friend of mine, his position was that it doesn't matter if your signal is clipping, you can turn...

How much do you EQ direct recorded bass?

I find myself EQ'ing bass tracks pretty drastically - especially to get close to that kind of "rex brown" (pantera) type bass sound. I also EQ pretty heavy to get rid of some of the boom. Just wondering what most people EQ curve is like for their bass tracks.

Metalcore Track I recorded this weekend....

I recorded 4 songs for a metalcore band this weekend, this is the first one - kind of an intro meant to be the first track on their EP. This is a preliminary mix, I haven't listened to it in my car yet (I listen to so much music in my car, I know how stuff should sound there...) Thoughts and...

Kick Drum Mic Placement (for metal)

Here is something to try if you are having trouble getting a good sound out of a kick drum. I was fighting with getting a good tone out of a kick I was recording last week. The front head of the drum had a soundhole, so I tried my usual method, which is stick my Beta 52 in the soundhole and...

Metal song we are working on

It is still in the conceptual stage, but I think this recording captures the overall "vibe" the finished song will have. Our desired sound is "Southern Metal" along the lines of Black Label Society, Down and Corrosion of Conformity. Link - MP3 What do you think of it?

Boominess and a lack of clarity or crispness on the highs

I have noticed I am having trouble getting an annoying amount of boominess in my mixes, as well as a lack of sizzle or crispness in the highs. I am not hearing this through my monitors, but it is noticeable when I go out and listen to it in a car CD player. I am using M-Audio SP5B monitors...

    Opinions/feedback - Metal (Metalcore) Track

Ok, this is a "quick" recording done for some friends of mine. They wanted to put a song concept down for their singer to work with while the idea was fresh in their minds. For me, it was a good excuse to practice tracking and mixing. Feedback and or opinions welcomed! Link to track in MP3...

Slightly more advanced heavy guitar tone questions

Ok, I have some questions regarding a specific type of heavy guitar tone. This is kind of beyond the usual basic questions regarding recording heavy guitar. All of these things are already a given here: 1. Got a tube amp with a JCM800 type circuit, and a 4x12 cab. 2. Got the SM57 close miked and...
