What you hear is not what you get - amp mic'ing

Hi all, Just struggling with the basic fact that after you mic something up, it's just not the same during play back as it is in real life. That's what mics do - even the good ones. Specifically, I'm having trouble with guitar amps and mild distortion. I've been dialing up a clean sound in my...

The Strat's new N3 noiseless pickups - Anyone have an opinion on these?

Being a home recorder, I like a lack of noise in my system. The American Deluxe Strat has N3 noiseless pups. I just listened to a rant about how they've lost the noise, but have also lost the classic Fender Tone. Just wondered if anyone here can comment.. Cheers, FM

Strat trem fix questions - Spings / block

Hi all/ Good news, I'm gonna buy a strat! Very exciting. Heaps of questions concerning the bridge. Will the trem stay flat to the body if I use 5 springs in the back with 11 gauge strings? Big difference between block or springs to hold the bridge flat? And the big one, will the bridge...

    Fender - Radius - larger (flatter) than 9.5" ?

Fender - Radius - is there a larger (flatter) fret board than 9.5" ? Just a quicky... I read that the standard modern Strat is 9.5" radius (compound) Do they make flatter fret boards? (I can't see an easy way to compare all the models at their web site..) Cheers, FM

Line6 Pod X3 vs Blues Jr with SM57 - pick the amp...

Hi all. In a nutshell - over the last few months there have been posts asking about simulated guitar effects (POD, Boss etc) vs mic'ing a real amp. Here is a sample (link below) where I've recorded *three* sections of self-indulgent wank, two with simulated sounds from the Line6 Pod X3 and one...

Iso booth - No good. A warning to all building vocal booths.

Some samples. A rush job unfortunately, but you get the idea. Dual mic box test by Fusionman on SoundCloud Two sets of four samples, each of the four having the following description: 1-Source mic only in iso booth 2.Source mic and room mic in iso booth 3-Source mic only in treated room...

Iso booth - No good. A warning to all building vocal booths.

Hi all. I seemed pretty excited about by booth pictured here... https://homerecording.com/bbs/general-discussions/studio-building-display/new-iso-booth-no-more-noise-310324/ ... and I guess I can't complain 'cause it did stop a heap of noise and the material was free. But only now, in this...

The Strat - fashion vs function

Wow. How hard is it choose a strat? I've never owned a strat, only a strat copy when I was young. Followed by a Ibanez Jem (which to some degree started based on a strat) and a Gibson copy. Now that I'm recording, I find myself looking for a strat because *nothing* I have will get me that neck...

Mixing a group of sounds - inconsistant levels

Hi all. A question for you about mixing a group of sounds. I recorded some backup vocals on the weekend. Three part harmonies in the chorus and a few backups in a non chorus part. I grouped the three tracks to a group track so I can add effects and control volume at one point (‘cause I guessed...

They call me lefty - unbalanced mix

Hi all. I always knew something was not right. The hearing test confirmed it - my left ear is certainly lacking in most of the frequencies they measured. My right ear is ok (for it's age). Does it bother me? Never. Actually I'm not even aware ... except for when I'm mixing down my music. Here...

Recording bass - DI and mic

Hi all, I have a bass amp now to mic up, like the big boys. If I wanted to record two sources, one DI and the other a mic on the cabinet for a bass track, how would you choose to arrange this in your DAW? Would you have a mono track with both sources mixed or would you have this as two tracks...

Compression pedal - what do you use it for

Hi guys, I've been playing guitar forn quite a while, but as far as gear goers I never looked deep into any pedals or amps. Really, I'd say zero experience here. What does compression do for *you* and where do you put it in your effects chain? I'd really appreciate your info here. Cheers, FM

    Basic bass amplifier info wanted

Hi all, I'm looking at playing bass in a drum/bass/guitar/(Other instrument) format just for fun, using a practice-studio sized room. I have a little BTB 6 string with passive Bartonini pickups and an active eq. I like him, he does a good job for recording. Can you guys shoot some basic info...

    EMU 0404 USB - Mono input/stereo output??

Hi all. Bit of a noob question, but I'm stuck. I'm using Cubase, which will see one or both inputs of my USB EMU 0404 no problem. Except of course when I have only one mic plugged into one of the EMU inputs, and want to record a stereo track in cubase, in which case I get a stereo track with...

    Flexible goose neck mic stands

Has anybody used those flexible gooseneck mic holders? You know the ones that you can move into position and they stay there? Do you get any extra noise from vibration? Do they screw up after a short time? Cheers, FM

The iso booth - amp recording

Hi all, Still pondering how to use my new isolation cabinet and get a good sound out of my amp. Just reading around, I'm not reading great things about the sound of small spaces, even when acoustically treated. Specifically, I'm refering to a comment by Ethan that I read somewhere here. So...

    QWERTY midi to Cubase

Hi all, OK, I'm stuck. I'm trying to use the QWERTY keyboard as a MIDI input device to add notes on a MIDI track in CUBASE. I've looked around and have installed a few programs (Virtual Midi keyboard and QWERTY Keyboard Midi 1.1 and others), all of which do produce the default paino sound when...

New Iso booth - no more NOISE

Hi all. I've had a request to post some pics and info of my new ISO both. I've been trying to deal with the very large volumes out of my Fender Blues Jr to obtain that classic Tube sound. When I say very large volume, of couese I'm not competing with a Laney Stack, just my domestic setting. A...

Hi all - What a great day today. *Finally* got the isolation booth installed, and found it, well, mediocre  Anyway, making loud noises is slightly less noisy now :p So after Buying a cheap a$$ Fender Blues Jr amp Buying a cheap standard SM57 dynamic mic Buying a few cables buying a...
