Can someone please shed some light for this newbie on the differences (sound wise) between the 3 major types of mics-- dynamic, condenser, and tube.
Thanks,
KF
Can someone please tell me whether there is pre-amp in the MR-8?
Also, I know that the MR-8 does not have phantom power, does that mean that if I were to buy a tube mic or a condenser mic, I would have to buy phantom power as well?

Any opinions on the APEX450 (a large diaphram condenser tube mic-- whatever that means?!)
Also, do I need a pre-amp for this mic? I'm using the Fostex MR8 as my recording gear and I believe it doesn't have phantom power.
Thanks in advance.

Trying to achieve that Mark Knopfler sound, I asked a reliable source what mics were used in Knopfler's latest CD. I was told that a vintage tube mic-- a Telefunken and / or a SKG c12 was used. Given that there is no way I could afford these vintage mics, another option was suggested by the...
I have been using the freeware "Audacity" to edit and add colour to the music that I record with my Fostex MR-8.
"Audacity" has a function whereby it can remove the vocals from commercial CDs. Although it does not work 100% of the time, the last two CDs that I tried to strip the vocals from...
I'm currently using the Sherman DM-8712 mic for vocals directly into my Fostex MR-8. The sound I get is not very good.
Has anyone heard of this mic? Any info is appreciated. Also, how does this mic compare to the Shure SM-57 in terms of sound quality?
Thanks,
KF
I know, I know, another dumb newbie question. But can someone please tell me what a midi is? I hear this term thrown about quite often in here.
My Yahama keyboard has midi out, so I do have the option to use it....only if I knew how!
Can someone please help me?
Thanks,
KF
Has anyone recorded vocals using the MR-8? If so, how did it turn out?
My own vocal recordings sound crap (partly because of me, partly because of mic). But I just want to know how to make the vocals sound better.
Any thoughts?

Hi everyone,
Santa recently left a Fostex MR-8 under the tree and I have been playing with my new toy since.
I have recorded a couple of songs by Mark Knopfler (vocals and keyboard). The keyboard sounds okay, but the vocals are too muffled. The mic that I am using is a mic I bought a long...
For those who have been following my threads, I am a moving target.
At first I was thinking of the Tascam Porta2, then the 414MK3 or the 424MK3, now I'm considering the Fostex MR8.
I know I am breaking my cardinal rule and also the advice of some of the members on this board, but now I think...
I am very close to deciding on which recording gear to buy as my inaugural initiation into the recording world.
There is a new Tascam Porta02 for $250CDN and a used Tascam 244 MKIII for the same amount.
I have looked at Tascam's website and do not see the manual nor the specs for the...
Being an absolute newbie to the home recording hobby, I would like to know what other equipment is required besides the Tascam Porta 2 to make my own recordings?
The manual suggests:
- stereo mastering recorder for mixing down
- RCA cables
- Monitoring equipment (some kind of amp & speaker...
As Bruce Springsteen will be in Toronto next Thursday (Dec 5), I am thinking of purchasing a Mini Disc player to record the concert.
Can someone please tell me how easy or difficult it is to use the MD? Also, how is the sound quality? I'm not trying to make a bootleg of the concert to see...
Hi Everyone,
I am interested in purchasing an electric guitar that is suitable for someone with small hands (insert joke here).
With my limited knowledge about guitars, I know that Gibsons generally tend to have a thicker fingerboard, whereas Strats have a narrower neck and thus a smaller...
Hi Everyone,
I know this may have been asked many times, but please bear with me.
I am a novice in this recording hobby. The key word being hobby. I am just interested in recording some stuff for my own enjoyment. As such, I really don't need all the bells and whistles. But I do need a...
