    prettiest turd

If you were forced to choose between the pre's in a Yamaha AW4416, a Mackie board, an a 1970's vintage Tascam Model 5 board, which way would you go? By strange coincidence, that is the choice I have at present.

My CD, such as it is.

All right, I guess that this is the place for this. We had a good space to record, but not too many good mics. The tracking was done on ADAT's, and we mixed with Sound Forge. I am the guy playing the lead stuff, which was all electric mandolin. I am determined to do a better job on the...

    where did the cymbal go?

When I play a midi file in the Chopper I hear cymbal crashes, but when I play back the same thing after it is recorded, the crashes are missing. I can see the cymbal event on the track, so I figure that maybe the instrument assignment is different than in the Chopper for some reason. Any ideas?

    Drum Machine or Software?

I already have Acid 3.0, and I like the easy looping, but I dont get how to edit drum kits, or take a basic beat and add various variations and fills. I have an old Roland R-8, which is getting very flakey. It doesn't start up right half the time and forgets the songs. When it works, I love...

    Fun at GC

So... I returned the DOA Oktava MKL2500 I bought last week. This time I was determined to test its replacement out before I took it home. The clerk was a little reluctant, but came around. We went into the live sound room, where a CD was blaring at about 145 dB's. He connected the power...

    Schertler DYN-M

I don't know about anybody else, but my home studio is usually a very noisy place. Three kids, a pug, a wife, dishwasher - you know... I discovered that the Schertler DYN-M, billed as a contact dynamic microphone, that I normally use for live sound with my mandolin, works wonderfully with...

low z mic always better than a high z mic?

I have been looking at a beyer m201 that is rated at 600 ohm instead of the usual 200 ohms. Is there any application where the higher impedence would be a good thing? I would imagine that a 600ohm mic would have more tendency for high frequency attenuation with long cables, but otherwise, how...

    Stewart Audio MP-2?

I am rebuilding my home studio after many years, and I am looking for cheap stuff to take care of some of the basics until I can afford better. I was at my local GC this weekend, and they had a used Stewart MP-2 mic preamp for $120. I have done internet searches - the company is still in...

    Rik's Music?

Anybody ever done business with these people? Their prices on mic's are much lower than anybody else's.

    Vintage EV V2A Ribbon Mic

I picked this up many years ago. It appears to a 50's vintage piece. It looks sort of like a smaller version of an RCA 44. It is labeled as 50 Ohms. I attempted to replace the odd 4 pin plug with an XLR ages ago. I have never been sure I wired it right. It sounds a little muted. Does...

    Teac Model 5 Mixer

In the deep recesses of one of my closets is an ancient Model 5 mixer, probably from the mid 60's. I picked it up as part of a trade deal many years ago, and I have never gotten it out. It weighs about a million pounds, plus or minus, and is big as a Buick. Does anyone have an opinion on the...
